What was so special about South America that led a significant number of Nazis to flee there after WW2 had ended?

I have an alright overarching idea of history in most areas of the world, but South America is a complete blind spot for me. If someone could paint a general picture of its history that would be appreciated.

Why was Israel involved in the Suez Crisis?

What factors made Israel decide to join with France and Britain? Was it simply the control of the Titan Straits? And why did Israel invade first without military support from the European countries?

Did post-1000AD medieval western Europeans generally consider the Holy Roman Empire to be a continuation of the classical Roman Empire, a successor to it, or just a not-very-related state that had copied the name?

Was the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 sustainable? Could a nation divided in half like that last?

I've always thought the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 was an interesting solution, and lately I've been thinking about the feasibility of a nation under two governments. Was this sort of system feasible? Did any other country have success with it? Or was it unlikely to ever last long-term?

Candles for lighting. In movies there's always a million lit candles everywhere. Was their use really common at all? Especially for common people?

In TV and movies, there's always a ton of lit candles in any indoor night scene. Very ubiquitous, but of course media isn't real life.

How much did candles cost? Did commoners often make their own, doing so sparingly because of costs?

Did the affluent actually light their entire castle every evening? Or were candles more of a "sometimes" thing.

Thanks!

WW1: why didn't soldiers use shields or some kind of portable barrier 4 or 5 men could carry at a time when crossing up and over the trenches?

I understand how shields would be too heavy for one man, but why didn't they use some that multiple men could carry to protect themselves in small groups?

Some kind of two person wide barrier that 4 or 5 men could crouch behind where they could carry them up over the trenches for at least temporary protection.

Citation help?

I'm working on a paper right now, and this Banda book (https://www.amazon.com/Banda-journey-through-Indonesias-fabled/dp/B0000CP8SS) has me stumped on how to properly Cite it (Chicago). On the title page, there is the main author listed (like on the amazon listing), but there is a second "Editing and additional text by: Nigel Simmounds. Do I list both authors, or just the main one? Bridging Manchu to Mao -- book recommendations

Hello, I've recently finished an audiobook edition of Jung Chang's Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine Who Launched Modern China and thoroughly enjoyed it (without necessarily being to focused on its historical accuracy :P ).

I'm hoping to follow it on with something that starts from around when this book leaves off and covers figures such as Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek.

Rather than simply going for Jung Chang's Madame Sun Yat-sen. I thought I would come here and ask if anyone could recommend something. I've also had a look at Sun Yat Sen by Bergere (1998). Does anyone have an opinion on this book?

Finally, this may not please some but I'm really looking for something potentially biographical and primarily interesting rather than intensely analytical.

Thank you in advance and apologies if I've missed something in the booklist/rules.

In WW2 how often did AA guns actually hit their target?

Been on a pretty big WW2 documentary binge lately. I've noticed there's a pretty solid amount of AA fire in documentaries and movies alike during raids and etc. so how often would the ground crews actually hit their mark?

Also how did defending aircraft avoid being hit by their own AA guns?

Typing on mobile sorry for any typos!

Thanks in advance !

Would medieval historians (circa 1116) have understood there was a difference (in terms of reliability) between Homer's stories of the Trojan war, and something like Livy's history of the Punic wars?

Or did they just regard all classical texts as equally reliable
