Is it really accurate to retroactively consider people born in states like Genoa and Venice as italians ? we don't seem to do the same with regions like France and Germany for example .

I know duels went from expected/tolerated to unacceptable in the UK and US in the 19th century. However, even if duels were in a long decline before 1800, I don't understand why there was such a dramatic drop in societal acceptance that they became practically extinct by the early 1900's.

I was reading about the power outages in Aleppo recently and I started wondering about when and how Electricity reached the Middle East. Did Edison incorporate power companies in the Ottoman Empire like he did in Europe during the 1880s? Did electricity become common in Islamic Cities by the end of the First World War? or was the basic infrastructure built afterward WWI by Colonial powers? or did electrification emerge as apart of the Nationalist Modernization efforts during the Cold War?

It seems like there are plenty of African-Americans named Patrick or Sean, but hardly any with names from other national origins - I've never heard of an African-American named Giuseppe or Gerhardt or Vladimir. Why the prevalence of Irish names in particular?

To my knowledge, Italians, Southern Italians and Sicilians contributed more heavily to the Spanish imperial army than Spaniards did, why was that the case exactly?

Were most Spaniards disinterested by military service, or was there a desperate need for man power, regardless of where it came from?

I'd like to include some examples of games and contests (both of the skill and chance variety) that might have been common in France (or elsewhere; I'm not picky) about that time.

So far, all I have are tropes: jousting would be in its infancy, but it's still restricted to the relatively wealthy. Other ideas I had were footraces, horse races, darts, wrestling, perhaps a melee with mock weapons.

Would this be supplied or would the sailor me expected to provide their own equipment like in land armies? 2)What would the average sailor's day consist of? 3) (more of a general medieval navy question). How was medieval naval warfare conducted? Was it more about boarding or using bows and crossbows? 4) What sort of ships did the Venetians use? 5) Why was the Venetian navy so superior to many other navies? What were they doing differently? 5) How was the navy organised? In land armies, generals tended to be nobles and kings who led the armies. Were captains of Venetian ships awarded the position based on merit or birth? Did many nobles join the navy or did it tend to be lower class people who enlisted? 6) Did the Venetian navy have a reputation? If so, what was it? 7) What was the average soldier's diet? 8) What reasons might someone have to join? 9) What were conditions aboard Venetian ships like? How did sailors sleep and was disease common? 10) Were captains given a better bed and better food than the other sailors, such as in later navies? 11) What ranks/levels could someone expect to gain? 12) Could a sailor gain a holding of private land?

I know they held some territory in France, but never enough to really be the King/Queen of it, and yet they proclaimed they were and I would like to know why.

So I was just talking with a friend of mine, who has an interest in history. Is this true? If so, why?
