I noticed that when the Olympics were founded only amateur athletes were allowed to compete. 90 years later, professionals were first allowed in the games. I can research all the times for track athletes in the Olympics but they must not have been the best in the world because they're not professional. How good were the professional athletes at the time?

I am curious how food was stored and prepared for people who were part of ocean traffic prior to the 18th century. Particularly, methods of preservation and basic cooking principles common to sea-faring.

I can sort of understand how people who grew up in societies where terrible things, as we would see them, are acceptable can believe there ok. The guys who did the holocaust were at least in their mid teen when hitler came to power.

How would people living before modern weather science have thought about clouds? What were they thought to be?

Did any culture ascribe religious qualities to clouds (the clouds being gods, spirits, ghosts etc), like they did for other elements in the sky like the sun or lightning?

I'm currently watching a fictionalized movie called Kon-Tiki from 2012 and my understanding is that Heyerdahl manages to get from South America to Polynesia with only a raft built with technology available 1500 years ago. But what I've yet to figure out is if the only result is that this theory is plausible, or if there in fact is some substance to the theory.

Hi, I have a question to ask about 10th Armored Division. I have found many articles about the division but I'm looking for more info on 90th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron (Troop E). I know this troop was a assault tank company but I'm not sure of how many vehicles or men were in the troop, I'd like to know. My main question is, on my great grandfathers discharge papers it list him as light truck driver, and a rank with private first class. I'm thinking he drove a jeep but was it more likely that he drove a tank ? In my opinion I don't think so because he isn't a technician and qualified for the job. If you have any pictures, articles, or anything else, that would be nice. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I am currently rereading A Game of Thrones and there are several points where Ned and Catelyn Stark refer to each other as "my lord" and "my lady" despite being in the privacy of their own bedchamber.

I know GRRM has done a lot of research in order to make his novels as historically accurate as possible which is why I was wondering if it was actually the norm for nobles to be so formal in private between their spouses.

As the question says, I'm suddenly interested in the character and attitudes and life of the man behind the music. I'm classically trained in piano and Bach has been one of my favorite composers. I've done a little bit of reading and I've come across conflicting answers - some places say he was fairly religious and perfectionist, other places say he was kind of secretly wild and temperamental - so I wanted to ask the experts here. I've always seen him as a fatherly if dull figure, but that's probably due to a romanticized view of him as one of the big names in Classical music.

Nowadays, we see occasionally news articles on breaking scientific news, such that most average Americans have at least heard of things like CERN, Quantum Mechanics, and the Hubble telescope.

My question is, during the scientific revolution, how much public awareness was there of the works of people like Galileo, Descartes, Huygens, and Newton? They were obviously aware of one another, with Descartes for instance referencing the works of Galileo (and subsequent backlash) as a reason for delaying publication of The World. But would, say, a carpenter in London know about the discoveries of Newton, even if he didn't understand them at all, in the way that most contemporary folks have heard of the Hubble Space telescope?
