I live in my rural home a ways out in the country, is there a good chance soldiers will be kicking down my door, or did that mostly happen to cities and villages near them? I guess im asking if the war had an effect on country folk.

Is there a place where I can order historical (political) maps of the world? e.g. a map of the roman empire, or what the world 'looked like' to the ancient Greeks, or how the world was divided in the 1800s etc. (?)

Google Images yields some results, but maybe there is a go-to website for this, and maybe there is even an online shop to order such maps from? Does anybody know? Wasn't able to find anything!

I'm currently playing a lot of Hearts of Iron 4 and while playing as USA, there are war plans for some of the major powers (eg. Black for Germany, Red for Britain, White for the USSR and Orange for Japan). I have never heard of these war plans, so I wanna know how these plans were used in reality.

The cross was a feared instrument of Roman torture and punishment. Were people repulsed or perhaps shocked when this new group started using it as one of its key symbols?

If so, was there coordination between US/British command structures and their USSR equivalents? Could Western and Soviet aircraft ever engage in combat, possibly by mistaking each other for Germans?

I enjoyed Wild Swans, but after getting a few chapters into her book on Mao, I got the feeling that she was simply writing out of spite. This made me question her initial work as well.

I've heard somewhere that many ancient soldiers didn't have time in battle to ensure the death of their enemies. Instead they would severely incapacitate and wound their enemies.

My textbooks tend to focus mostly on the (awful) transit to the Americas and the equally horrific experience of slaves once they got there. It kind of skims over the people left behind. But there has to have been a huge effect, right? You can't lose that many people in your society without some drastic changes to your society and your culture.

My question is since it would be the shortest trip to arrive in California (although I am not sure how possible it would have been) from China did Chinese immigrants typically arrive on the east coast and just take the train westward? Did they go through Mexico? or how did they get workers arriving from Asian countries to the frontier?

I know this may be a dumb question. But if I was out in the middle of nowhere I would have no idea how to survive and I'm curious how people with much less knowledge than I for thousands of years survived.

I was just reading about Hieronymus of Cardia and his History of the Successors.

I was wondering, how was it that whole works from antiquity (that we know well enough for us to know they existed) totally disappeared, and how possible is it that an archeological dig could still turn up these lost works one day?
