How did the stock market work before we had internet, computers, the telephone, et cetera?
Say I lived in in San Francisco around the turn of the century. How would I buy stock listed on the New York Stock exchange? How would I know what the current price was and be able to buy at that price without the price changing between when I put in my order and when the order was executed?
Furthermore, how would I buy stock even earlier in history, before the invention of the telegraph? Would I have to go to the stock exchange and buy it in person?

We closely examined the process involved in writing a research paper in the six-part "finding and using sources" series.
But what happens if you are writing a work with the intent of getting it published in an academic journal or book?
Do articles and book chapters often take a different structure or tone than a thesis or dissertation?
Peer review is often mentioned as an indicator that a work has been checked for accuracy and completeness. What exactly does the peer review process entail? Does the editing process require additional steps beyond peer review?

I've been trying to track down the meaning behind this symbol.
I received this as a gift from my mother, the only info I have is that my great grandfather sent this from Poland, would guess that it dates back to late 1800s to early 1900s. His family name was Ostrowski.
Any clues would be appreciated as this symbol is a mystery to us.

Currently reading Taylor's "Bismarck: the Man and the Statesman" and have stumbled over a few things I don't understand. First is his repeated references to a "'Gladstone ministry'" (with one inverted comma). I don't believe this directly refers to the British governments of Gladstone as it is used in reference to other countries, presumably as a comparative?
Secondly, Taylor also refers to Bismarck as being similar to a "man of our own times" in that he is almost like a coalition on his own. Anyone know who this refers to (I'd guess Churchill)?
Thanks in advance.

Met an old Czech who worked in a concentration camp during ww2 (told the story and was told to post this question here) but he had stories of the work they would do, including making army boots and guidance system for the V-2 rockets. The boots they would make wrong (not enough padding. sole improperly positioned) and would force a nail up into the soldiers foot during long marches. But he talked about how the camp they were in worked on the guidance systems for the V-2 rockets, would have "diamond powder" (remember he was from Czech. not sure every english word he used was what he was looking for) for sanding down areas in the missile. but he said they would often sprinkle the diamond powder into the Guidance systems/Gears/insides of the rockets. Do you guys think the action of the people at this concentration camp helped with the notoriously bad accuracy of the V-2 rockets?

Seems like they went to some effort to include some specific things like a certain number of people voting republican and them not being counted. Or the corporal ignoring his rebellion until it became big enough.

Legally speaking, would a treaty signed in, say 1890, still apply to the German government of today if it had never been rejected? Does this go for the Weimar Republic (since it was the direct successor) too?
Generally speaking, when can you speak of a new state and when of a continuation of an old state?

Or the opposite, which African countries had no real basis or example of national/ethnic/cultural unity prior to their colonial institutions?

I just read that in the Thirty Years war about 8 million people died and it got me wondering just how they figured out that number, since I assume no one was keeping a specific individual casualty count.

No matter where you look, the bow is a weapon that can be found in the hands of many soldiers from around the world. Even uncontacted tribes, completely cut off from the outside world, have been seen holding bows.

Wikipedia states that several sources, including Hitler himself, believed that the German invasion of Greece delayed Operation Barbarossa, preventing German forces from achieving outright victory initially and beginning a war of attrition on the Eastern front. Did the Battle of Greece actually have this effect?
Note: I could only find one instance where a question of this type was asked before, and it had no replies.

They painted themselves as Socialists in the beginning. After Hitler's takeover of the party, the National Socialists incorporated much of the ideals of fascism, which included a fair deal of Corporatism and Mercantilism. They also incorporated many socialist plans such as social welfare, etc.
However, they saw both Capitalism and Communism as Jewish economic systems and directly opposed them. They were against most forms of Socialism as well, believing it to be the first steps to Jewish Communism.
The Nazis largely gained power by bringing violence and stability where the police had been ineffective. Socialists and Communists ran the Streets of Germany, once the government failed and the Police were an ineffective force. Several failed attempts at revolution(some violent) by Socialists and Communists resulted in growing Nazi power.
Basically, the Nazi party gained power because the Socialists and Communists attacked people on the streets, and the Nazis turned it back on them, destroying the Communists and Socialists again and again and again.
One has to understand that the Nazis were considered the political and economic saviors of Germany. Their social and foreign policies were controversial even at the time. It was only after the Nazis had proven to be successful that they were even able to put their social policies in force, and even then it required them to largely disband the democracy of the time to do so.
The fact that you have trouble understanding that the Nazis didn't come to power because you think the Leftists didn't do enough to oppose them, only dooms you to repeating the same mistakes that let the Nazis come to power in the first place.
Violence creates Chaos. Chaos creates Uncertainty. Uncertainty results in Extremity. Extremity results in more Violence. And the Circle gets progressively more vicious until someone introduces Law and Order back into the Circle. And at a certain point, like for example, when people are murdering each other in the City Square or on the steps of the Capitol, it really doesn't matter if it's an Austrian man with a weird mustache who constantly rants about the Jews, just so long as someone installs Law and Order back into Society.
The purpose these traditionalists had was to talk about how the Left was silencing and attacking Trump Supports.
In Response, members of the Left silenced and attacked them.
I realize that forum posts on history often get things wrong (hence why /badhistory was founded, after all), so I wanted to ask here if the post is mostly accurate and not leaving anything important out. I don't want to run the risk of picking up misinformation or (slightly) distorted/biased accounts of history, because even though I study history in university and had this covered at length in school, it's been some since that and in my lectures and seminaries now where mostly about other time periods.

I searched the subreddit and James Douglass' book was not mentioned. I found the book featuring a surprising amount of evidence from a wide variety of people. Is there any reputable, scientific review of the book? Beyond "if it's calls it a conspiracy it must be lunacy".

Did Ali ibn Muhammed send any emissaries to the Abbasids' rivals seeking recognition or support? Did he get any? (Leaving aside exploitation of Abbasid weakness to advance their objectives in a way that might have indirectly helped the rebels, but didn't have any direct bearing on them, like the Tulunid secession)

Why did the US go as far as supporting anti-communist propaganda in the United States, fight two major proxy wars, and assist in overthrowing pro-communist governments to "contain" communist expansion? Would communism have spread widely if the US didn't "stop" it? What impact would that have on the US economy and national security?

I am talking to a co worker about his incident and I learned it in apush back in high school. I am pretty sure they sent a broadcast for help for several days until they were killed off. I wasn't sure if it was an uprising group or the previous government before the curtain fell.

My motivation for this question is this dungeon scene in Ben Hur. It seems to me like long term imprisonment of any kind would be a very impractical punishment in any society where resources are tight - feeding the prisoners, paying the jailers, and building the prison. Compared to forced labor, that seems like a lot of waste for these societies.
Bonus question: if long term imprisonment wasn't common, where did the common media depiction of "lock them in the dungeon and throw away the key!" come from?

Hollywood likes to show waves of Japanese coming from the jungle and getting mowed down by machine gunners. So I'm wondering how effective was it?
