During the age of the pike square, cavalry (in Western Europe) gave up their lances for firearms to ride around and shoot at the pike squares, and even other cavalry. How accurate would their shots be, on average, when in battle riding around (as opposed to dismounted)? Were there reports of one or groups of men who were especial accurate?

The horse archers on the Eurasian Steppes were supposedly quite accurate. They utilized techniques like timing release to when a galloping horse had all feet off the ground to decrease shaking and increase accuracy. Was this, or other techniques, used by firearm cavalry to increase accuracy as well?

I think L.A occupies way too much space to be honest. It lacks the skyscrapers of cities such as Chicago, and NYC.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a comprehensive guide to the Roman army, and warfare from the late republic to through the principate? (aside from Cambridge histories, those are a bit too expensive). Also, recommendations for books on Roman historiography would be helpful. I'd like to look into several ancient historians (currently interested in Tacitus, Polybius, Livy, and Josephus).

Any and all help is much appreciated.

OK, I know "pre-modern" is broad, but as a medievalist with some classical background, I can't think of any early descriptions of seasickness. Do any examples spring to mind?

I've heard Las Vegas described as a secular pilgrimage center. Going to Las Vegas is almost a rite of passage for many Americans. It's the favored location of bachelor parties, 21st birthdays, and other major milestones where alcohol consumption and lack of inhibition are expected. How did this happen? I'm curious about the origins of casino gambling, etc. in the city, but also the history of how it came to occupy such a prominent place in wider American culture as the place we go to break social rules.

Running a Google Image Search on his name turns up all sorts of contemporary photographs, which seems very unusual to me. I don't imagine the Apaches had their own cameras and development studios at the time, so what was going on?

I'm writing a paper for my World History class and was just wondering why there wasn't a quicker intervention from foreign nations to stop the genocide in Rwanda?

Compared to most genocides, it didn't last for a long period of time but I'd imagine other countries had to know about it at least after a few weeks. Did the problems encountered in Somalia have some affect on the global reaction?

Were there some agreements in place that stopped a country like the U.S. who is usually extremely involved in other countries from helping the people of Rwanda?

I'm having trouble finding references to the traditional dress of gaels in the middle ages.

I was listening to the AskHistorians' podcast on WWI and /u/elos_ made a comment that the amount killed was not out of the ordinary. Is this true? I have a hard time believing this after studying so much about how this effected the post-war years and the amount of literature spawned based on this premise.

For example, in an army of 30-40 thousand, how much did a general actually know about where all the different parts of his army were, and whether or not they had enough supplies to function?

Was it as accurate as traditional artillery?

I guess because riots here had the potential for guns, petrol bombs, etc. that horses wouldn't have been as useful.
