Did any army leaders in ancient history, i.e. Roman times, know about or recognise what is now termed PTSD in soldiers?

How'd they deal with it if they did recognise that it was an issue?

One aspect of seventeenth century England I have understood is that it had an increasingly fractured religious and political environment, with a wide array of strikingly radical political groups, such as the Levellers, heterodox religious movements such as the Adamites, and both such as the Diggers. As far as I know these groups were uniformly on the side of the Parliamentarians, but were they able to exert any influence over the Commonwealth? All I really know about Cromwell's social policy is that he banned Christmas.

As someone who is interested in Roman figures, how accurate are the biographies of Caesar that Plutarch and Suetonius have written?

One of my favorite movies is Black Hawk Down but it happened before I was born. I was just reading an old article called "What A Downed Black Hawk In Somalia Taught America" but it didn't address the question I have been wondering.

How did America and the news networks react to these events? Did the American people know they were stranded or did they only release this info after the event was over? If anyone has seen The Martian the whole country is cheering and waiting for the return of an astronaut on Mars, was it kind of like that? I'm mostly wondering how big of a deal the American people made it out to be, like constant breaking news updates on the story, or a few short clips and then people moved on?

I know this is a general question, so I guess I'm looking for more of a general answer.

When I hear that the population inside the City exceeded 1 million people I have to wonder if it was really a safe place to be. Was it common to be robbed, raped, kidnapped? Did citizens have to take special measures to protect their homes? Did people carry weapons for self defense? Was there a police force that people reported crimes to? How effective was this 'police' at catching criminals?

I guess I'm just having a hard time imagining such a massive ancient city that was not wrought full of crime and misery.

Hi! I'm reading Adam Zamoyski's Phantom Terror, and on page 81, he makes a reference to counter-revolutionaries' changing of identities thusly:

Many people had more than one passport, sometimes a pocketful, stolen or forged. It was not unknown for men to dress up as women in order to go through with a marriage to another man which would provide them with a new legal identity.

Obviously, this second sentence is pretty incredible (and very interesting) if true, but Zamoyski's citation (he footnotes at the end of each paragraph, rather than mid-sentence) leads to page 41 of Richard Cobb's Reactions to the French Revolution.

There, Cobb discusses (and sources) the use of multiple passports by counter-revolutionaries, but not the fake marriage practice. Does anyone know of any sources for Zamoyski's latter statement?

(I would prefer one in English-language historiography, but am willing to dust off my GCSE french/take someone's word for it if necessary.)

I seem to have read somewhere about a Scandinavian monarch who become the prime minister of his country after the monarchy was abolished. Am I remembering correctly, or should I be posting this in r/writingprompts instead?

This is a heavily disputed subject. I can't find any sources, I can find post war statements, but I can't find any sources.

The Russian historian Nikolai Baryshnikov disputes this claim, as he can't find any sources either.

At the 20th Party Congress in 1956 Khrushchev delivered a secret speech "On the Cult of Personality and Its Consequences" sharply critical of Stalin. The speech was leaked to the Isrealis who gave it to the US and consequently was printed in the New York Times. In the Soviet Union however the speech was officially released only in 1989. How well known was it to the average citizens of the Soviet Union? If knowledge of it was widespread, what was the reaction?

Bonus question: I heard it was one of the major causes for the Sino-Soviet split. What were the reactions in socialist countries other than China, especially the GDR?

Was that one of its original "selling points"? If it was, what was so special about its design? What went wrong?

I am writing a history paper titled "To what extent was Alexander the Great's generalship the main reason for the victory at the Battle of Gaugamela?".

Now, I am not looking to have this question answered - I just want to know the best sources that I can use to answer it myself. I know that Arrian is considered the most reliable of the Ancient sources - but that he wildly over exaggerates the size of the Persian army as well as their training, and that more modern historians - such as Hans Delbruck - have drafted up more accurate statistics.

However, I'm not sure, for example, how much of Delbruck's book contains the actual battle, or how much of Arrian's or Plutarch's writings do. if you could help me with this, it would be greatly appreciated!

Was it because a big army could beat every small groups of troops? So to stand a chance against the enemy they had to gather a huge army too?

Is that why rebels and Civil wars are more common now than before?

I was under the impression that it was Bologna, followed by Oxford, followed by Cambridge. But I've also heard recently that Morocco and Mecca both have much older universities, from the 9th century. Is that true? Is this a matter of "what exactly is a university?"

How fair was The Versailles Treaty? As in, was it fair to punish Germany as much as it did, were its terms too radical, and did each term of it have appropriate justification?

How well know or practiced was the culture and language of the Romans during their empire?

I'm not too fussed here about specific time periods (Akkadian vs Third Dynasty of Ur, etc.) I'm just curious about what we actually know about these peoples. The stuff I've heard mentions them being nomadic, using hit-and-run tactics when at war with the Akkadians, and I think I heard they may have been pastoralists. Do we know anything about religion or social organisation? Are there any comparisons that can be made with later Turkic nomadic people? Did the Gutians have horses?
