I assume the colonies were named by the Monarch or the first colonist. But what about states that came later? Also how did they decide where to split territory. The Louisiana purchase was huge but the states is fairly same.

Hello! I am a senior at university researching ancient Roman ascetics of Christianity. I am nearing the end of my research paper but am lacking primary sources, which are vital to a strong argument throughout.

I am asking if anyone knows of online texts/sites or books containing primary sources on the following saints: Paul the Hermit; John Jerome; and Simeon Stylites.

I also know that St. Antony - apprentice of Paul the Hermit, Evagrius, and Therodoret wrote extensively about the ascetics.

I was rewatching inglorious bastard's and you know the bar scene where the Germans count different on their hands, I was wondering if say the Romans still used two fingers to mean two or if that meant seven to em or something, is their any record on finger counting?

When the Bismarck and the Prinz Eugone broke out into the Atlantic, Hood and Prince of Wales were sent to pursue. This led to the Battle of the Denmark Straits in which Hood was sunk, Prince of Wales damaged, failing to sink the Bismarck but at least causing enough damage to abort it's sortie and sail for French Atlantic ports.

I cannot understand why the Royal Navy would send Hood, which was badly in need to modernization, being largely neglected in the inter war years, and Prince of Wales which was brand-new, suffering major teething issues which would cripple it in battle.

Alternatively, more capable ships like HMS Nelson, HMS Rodney, HMS Warspite could have been dispatched or maybe even HMS King George V which was at least a little newer than P of W. Where these ships available or tied up else ware? Would these ships have fared any better in battle with the Bismarck?

The work takes place in 1797-1798, and Billy is a sailor on the high seas who is impressed onto the fictional HMS Bellipotent. At night, he is offered two guineas as a bribe by an unknown afterguardsman in order to advocate for impressed sailors, a bribe he denies.

How significant was this bribe? And how much would it be worth in today's terms?

I'm 11k words into writing a pre-teen book about a girl who wishes to be a princess then finds out it's not all she cracked up to be. Any and all information you can provide would be SUPER. I'm just getting to the part where her wish is granted...and realizing I don't know enough. :)

I researched and found some information about the Medieval times, but it's a bit too general. Any info about daily life would be helpful. Here's what I have so far:

*Princess lives in Middle Ages and has to learn household management and charity *Princess is going to be wed to rival country to ensure stability, part of peace treaty. Has never met but hears stories of the man she’ll marry (not nice) and will be sent out of country, unlikely to return *Free time is needlework and reading *Charity is one of her most important jobs: make and embroider clothes for the poor *Attend chapel in the morning *Up at sunrise, Mass in Latin, only bread and wine for breakfast

This is to some extant based of the premise that the US intervened in Iran due to British Oil interests.

One would assume that if that behavior was consistent that the US would also have intervened in Saudi Arabia when Aramco was nationalized.

I'm assuming that Victorian ideals were still very prevalent; but then again college was still college, filled with hormonal early adults. Would a couple keep it under wraps? Would they be judged for being sexually active? Would you meet a potential young lady at a party/pub?

I know that title sounds rough, but I'm in position where I know little but it's expected from me to know a lot. I'm not very well educated on slavery mostly because we didn't learn about it in school and since it didn't happen (as much) where I live it was just one of those things that happen "all the way there in the USA" as if we don't even live on the same planet.

I've seen so many fights online and I would like to understand history better. Many times if I ask a question it ends up with me being called rude or ignorant, so it's hard for me to learn on that way.

I'm not trying to make myself a victim or something, I would just like to be more educated about life since I'm not 18 anymore and I don't live in my own little bubble of comfort.

If it's possible, I would like to read books that have some sort of personal experience. It is important to me to learn what happend in what order and on what date, I'm also much more interested about people behind those numbers.

To clarify what I mean with animal consciousness I mean whether or not it was believed animal were conscious beings with independent thought and feelings. I know that 17th century philosopher René Descartes claimed only humans had a 'non-physical mind', but I can't find anything about before then.

Furthermore with the treatment of animals I'm specifically wondering whether or not animal cruelty was truly looked down upon and punished or if it was just ignored. Additionally, was animal cruelty common in the era?

And finally, I know that in the Dutch language a horse actually shares human physical descriptions whereas other animals do not (i.e. 'hoofd' means head whereas 'kop' mean animal head). So this makes me wonder if horses were not only held in high regard but also seen as human like in terms of consciousness (perhaps differently than other animals?).

Assuming I was rescued by an allied ship, would I just become part of the rescuing ships crew? Would I be sent back to a port to be reassigned? Was there any effort at all to keep crews together? Thanks!

Hi team AskHistorians! I'm looking for book or article recommendations. I'm currently trying to write about a Nazi-run prison located in occupied Russian territory in 1942-43, and I've been trying to find existing secondary sources that talk about the day-today workings of the justice system in the occupied USSR or Poland, prison regimes operated by the SS in the Occupied Eastern Territories, etc. (I'm not interested in concentration camps or POW camps at the moment, just prisons, police stations, etc.). I'm coming up empty. If anyone knows of any potentially relevant material they could send my way, I would appreciate it. I will happily take anything in English, Russian or German, and less happily but still totally willingly accept stuff in French if you happen to have it. Thanks!

I apologize if this has been asked before. Is there an especially good resource to read for either world building or roleplay for a Dungeons and Dragons campaign?

I know in theory any history book dealing with the Middle Ages or Renaissance would be good. I guess what I want is a focus on how people lived, what technologies such people used and what peoples lives were like (with maybe a focus on the more interesting traveled people, soldiers, merchants, etc). Learning about the ways people did things.

I would say the less specific the better but learning particulars about a specific culture might lend some unique roleplay flavor. Witcher 3 seemed to have that going for it.

Also would his answer conform to official church doctrine of the time?
