What was England like before William the Conquerer?

My dad and other sources state repeatedly that William the Conquerer brought feudalism to England. While I don't doubt that, I am more curious as to what life was like before feudalism was introduced.

Have there ever been accounts of castles coming under siege while still under construction?

I was watching this documentary where people recreate a 13th century castle using period correct technology and tools and it got me wondering if there were ever accounts of castles being attacked while still under construction.

I am always told prostitution is the oldest profession, but am never given any evidence. It makes more sense to me that hunting or gathering alongside a barter system is more likely. Can anyone provide evidence to back up what really is the world's oldest profession?

Name of wagon mounted large bore musket

Earlier today i saw this, https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/0a/c5/5b/89/light-duty-canon-mounted.jpg and wanted to read more about it, but I can't remember what it was called and was hoping someone here would know. I've tried searching every possible combination that I could think of and was able to find this photo, but searching the name it gave has no other results.

Why did the U.S. institute parliamentary governments in S. Korea and Japan?

Hey, like it says in the title, I was curious why the U.S. installed parliamentary governmental systems in Japan after WWII, and in South Korea after the Korean War. The U.S. gov't uses a system with a separately-elected executive and two separate houses of lawmakers, so I was wondering what compelled them to change the model for these other nations (presuming the goal was to install a democratic government that would be more compatible with the U.S. going forward.) Thanks!

How aware of each other were the Han Dynasty and the Romans?

I've learned that there was limited contact between China and Rome but what was this contact like? The Han outlasted the Roman Republic but fell during the Roman Empire. Did the Han learn of the change and would the Roman Empire have been aware of the fall of the Han?

Could you help me pick good, reliable books on WWI and WWII?

Hello guys,

I'm a History graduate and, recently, I've been feeling a lot like reading about World War II, and also a bit of WWI. I went to a book store and took notes of some of the most interesting books on WWI and II that I could find there, but I'd love it if you could help me pick the best ones, i.e. the ones you know have good sources/accredited authors. I don't know much about the best WWI and WWII Historians out there, so any help is appreciated. I'd hate to waste my money and time on an unnacredited book or author.

These are the ones I could find:

WWI

  • The Pity Of War: Explaining World War I by Niall Ferguson;

  • The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914 by Margaret MacMillan;

  • World War One: The Global Revolution by Lawrence Sondhaus;

WWII

  • Inferno: The World at War, 1939-1945 by Max Hastings;

  • The Second World War: A Complete History by Martin Gilbert;

  • The Second World War by Antony Beevor;

  • The Richard J. Evans trilogy ( The Coming of the Third Reich, The Third Reich in Power, The Third Reich at War)

Thanks!

What was Sputnik's effect on the American public?

I'm getting into several books regarding the space race between America and the Soviets and was curious as to how it effected the psyche of the general American public. Without the existence of widespread info like we have today how did it play on the minds of citizens?

Thanks.

During World War 2, were aircraft carriers ever used in the Atlantic?

If so, to what effect? If not, why? I've read a lot about carrier engagements in the Pacific but I don't recall ever hearing of any in the Atlantic.
