Is this omission enough to doubt the historicity of the story, or is there more evidence? Couldn't there by various reasons for the omission, thus not serving as proof for it being fictitious?

Just saw this argument on /r/worldnews, and I wanted to see a more professional viewpoint of it. I see compelling arguments for both sides.

From what I've read about the cold war, proxy wars and spreading capitalist and communist ideas to newly decolonized states in Asia and Africa was always more important than an outright war between the two nations, especially after Stalin and Khrushchev's will for coexistence. So to me, it would look like they had no real reason to have an all out war anyway. But given the few times the USSR and America nearly went to war (Yom Kippur War, October 27 1962 incidents), it seems as if MAD played a big role in preventing these incidents become full blown wars.

But again, I'd love to see a professional's point of view here and for someone to correct me and go much more in depth, thanks!

I'm familiar with the report by Herodotus that to mourn a cat, they'd shave their eyebrows, or to mourn a dog they'd shave their head/body. But what about to mourn a parent? Or a child? Or the pharaoh? And would there be different degrees of mourning depending on what your place in society was? That is, would a princess mourn in a different manner than a slave?

Ken Livingstone was just suspended from the UK Labour Party to making allegations that this was the case, in the face of a "anti-semitism" debacle within the party. Politics and allegations aside, do his claims have a historical basis? Or is it more complicated than simply "Yes" or "No"?

Hi, I'm an Irish historian from Belfast who's primarily interested in studying nationalist and republican politics and groups in the North from the beginning of partition to the start of the Troublles (1922-1969).

I've met many former Volunteers in my time, but I was never able to find out if they were paid a salary.

I know that the UVF & UDA paid their Volunteers, through money from protection rackets etc, but I was wondering about the case in Republican/Nationalist groups.

Today we are told to drink so much water that our output is almost clear. But, this is only possible because fresh, clean water is readily available to us at any time. Even I notice I get dehydrated and fatigued easily if I don't drink more than one or two big glasses a day, even on days when I'm less active. Before the days of sanitation, I know that many people drank beer, even children, which probably only made dehydration worse. This is compounded with the fact that most people were generally much more physically active in their daily lives and wore many layers of clothing, even in hot months. How did they keep their energy levels up to do the constant work needed to survive in those days without those oversized sports bottles we have today?

Why have former British colonies/territories like Australia, Canada, India and the USA become federal countries while the UK itself remained unitary?
