I was reading on wikipedia about the Flight to Varennes when I read:

What were these mistakes? What would have been a better plan to allow for a more successful escape from the French revolutionaries?

I can imagine a lot of combat would have consisted of a bunch of blokes hiding behind some cover taking pot shots until one side took the initiative/ support turned up; I can imagine modern combat is similar but that's all I can do as I luckily have 0 experience of fighting in a war.

Following the Carnation revolution of 1974 Portugal adopted a semi-presidential system of government. So far I have found that this is because first it was the dominant system of government at the time (which I am not entirely sure about) and second it was seen as a kind of reward for the military officers who were instrumental in the revolution. Are there more reasons that explain this choice?

I know they were proud of the more "evolved" nature of the republic. Did people notice or write about the parallels as it happened? After it happened?

In honor of the Ides of March, I am curious if Caesar's last words were recorded. Where they really "Et tu, Brute?" or was that an invention of Shakespeare?

To clarify, I'm under the impression that historically symphony or chamber music was the popular music of the day, but then somehow fell out of favor and now most modern bands are 4 piece and a singer (drums, bass, guitar, singer or singer/guitar). I'm curious as to what lead this evolution in popular music.

I am doing what is called, The Super Hard Anime Quiz. For one question relating to the WW2-inspired anime Strike Witches, the question asks about a possible (second) inspiration for the episode. All I have been able to find is this isn't about Erich Hartmann (who is a known inspiration for the episode due to an incident where he stole Hitler's hat), and that the multiple-choice answers is that the pilot is: American, British, Italian, Japanese or Russian.

I've heard several times that Tank on Tank battles were rare during WWII, but I've never seen any real numbers on the numbers of battles. Anyone have these numbers?

I mean of course a boat that would float and be able to reach a destination even if it is slow and hard to control. I understand having a fleet of smaller boats is way better, but I'm thinking about size only here (lenght, width, carrying capacity).

If the biggest possible boat was not in western Europe, I'm interested as well to know where it would be.

I have read most of the novels listed in reply to today's earlier question regarding Historical Fiction. I have not read many biographies, but would like to dive into this genre. Any era will do as long as the writing is captivating.

As the titles states, did Louis XIV require proof from his nobles as Versailles depicts? If so, would this simply be a birth record? It seems that noble families would be well known and established and it wouldn't be easy to simply pretend to be of noble birth. So aside from the obvious posturing and intimidation did this serve some legitimate purpose?
