Thinking about the reasons for the great divergence between China and Europe, I was wondering how much could be down to the scientific revolution and more specific to great plethora of European Universities founded ca 1100-1500.

While it is rather easy to find lists of Europan Universities, I have had no luck finding a list of corresponding list of Chinese seats for higher learning.

Am I right in assuming that China at the end of this era would be far behind in the number of schools, or is that Western Bias? Or even worse, is the question itself too routed in a Western understadning of knowledge/education?

Hi, I just finished listening to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History and have become fascinated by world war one. I truly never understood the magnitude of that war, as well as the nuances that were in the background. While I don't condone the war, I have been raised in a western country where it would be fair to say I was raised with a negative few of Germany in regards to WW1 & 2 - however after hearing this I in fact have more or less a positive few of Germany during WW1. I guess I'm asking this question about Germany and Jews because I want to understand how Nazism was reached.

This idea plays a much bigger role than I appreciated in the debates over slavery in the territories that dominated so much of the US Congress's business during the late 1850s. In fact, both sides seem to have taken it for granted that slavery would never thrive in Nebraska or even Kansas, even if it were legal to own slaves there. (That did not keep them from fighting over the principle of the matter. By that point they wanted to fight.)

I don't understand why this would be. The horrors of slavery already thrived not only in deep south states such as Mississippi and Alabama, but also in border south states like Kentucky and Missouri. The main slave-holding counties in Missouri lay along the namesake river, pretty far north in that state. Conditions couldn't have been that different due west in Kansas, or slightly northwest in Nebraska. And why shouldn't the economics work just as well with a midwestern crop as it did with sugar and tobacco? Never mind working in a factory as slaves did in Richmond's Tredegar Iron Works.

Just to be clear, if this was merely a myth, but one that helped contain the spread of American slavery, I'm glad and grateful. I would just still like to clarify that it's a myth.

Maybe a highly pointless question, but here it comes: if I were born during Roman Empire how would differs perception of myself, compared with nowadays?

It seems that all of the camps purposed for mass killing were not located in Germany. For example Buchenwald and Dachau (both Germany) were apparently forced labor camps. Many people died in them of course but they were apparently not equipped with the same mass killing facilities as camps like Auschwitz (Poland). Was there a technical reason in German law or was it purely a matter of logistics with most Jewish victims being of eastern european origin?

My understanding of the Left-Right political spectrum, in the classical sense, is that the Left is a movement of changing the statusquo while the Right is about keeping the established system in place. When capitalism rose to the forefront and opposed other political-economic systems of the time, was it viewed as a leftist movement? Was there even rhetoric of a similar political spectrum at the time?

Although my question is political, I'm more interested in the historical background and shifting of ideologies through time.

The obvious trigger for this question is the increasingly likely possibility of a certain candidate becoming president, and red flags I should look out for to decide if it's truly time to leave. This question isn't about contemporary politics, though. I want to know about the experience of those who were in Germany during the rise of the Nazis. Obviously there were many well-known events corresponding to their rise, but were any of these events more immediately followed by intellectuals and other members of society leaving?

And what about the point of no return? What were the major social and political events after which it was too late to leave the country?

Bohemond son of Robert "The Guiscard" d'Hauteville, I'm looking for a nicely written, detailed biography of his life. Or, alternatively, I'd settle for something on The First Crusade if it focuses quite a bit on Bohemond. I keep coming up short on the former, and I've really no way of telling the latter.

I need information on the foreign relations of the Iberian Union within Europe (i.e. their allies, enemies, friends, trading partners, etc.). I can't find ANYTHING about this online, besides the people who hated them.

The Klan had been around for decades by the time of Hitler and saw a big resurgence around the 1920's, around the same time Hitler was formulating his own racial ideologies.

Does anyone know if Hitler had ever commented on that group in any way?

Is it a complete myth, partial truth, or what? I can only find references to the quote on popular websites.
