I was reading earlier today about the influence of imperialism on African nations after they were colonised and how the patriarchal tendencies infused itself into how the cultures treated women. I wanted to know whether or not women, prior to the surge of western imperialists, had a more important or equal role in society and if they were treated better than what has been happening at the start of the post-colonization era to the present day.

I recently started school and I have selected an accounting degree but I really love history. But my advisor suggested that there aren't many jobs available to anyone seeking a degree in history other than like museum curators and teachers. I'm not really interested in teaching I don't get along well with little kids and that's my biggest problem with a history degree is I was told the biggest application for it is teaching.

Would the French Foreign Legion be it, or is there a medieval/ancient equivalent? I ask this as there are so many elements of the series that are based on medieval and ancient history, the idea of a convict army guarding a remote perimeter is not impossible.

Right and left are called dexter and sinister in Latin, with the latter term coming to denote something evil in English. The English word "right" has many meanings, it can mean the direction or something which is correct, a positive connotation.

When did this start? How many languages have this pattern? Are there any examples of the opposite?

I often read historical novels set in the 1600-1800's and I'm never sure whether to picture the characters in wigs or not.

During WWII and after, the Soviet Union maintained several armies they termed "Shock Armies". They were often utilized as the lead in a major offensive to hit their opponents hard.

So what made these armies different than other formations?

I've been binge-watching Game of Thrones, a show notorious for its depictions of violence and cruelty. Many people find it shocking, but I've read a few books on the history of the Middle Ages and my impression is that, if anything, the people of 13th-century England were even worse. That's just my impression, though. It makes sense to me because TV producers are often obliged to tone down the violence in order to appease censors. I'd like a historian on the Middle Ages to offer a detailed comparison.

Is the violence and cruelty in GoT completely true to history?
