I read recently that the Seljuk empire disintegrated about a century before the Mongols came to the Middle East/Persia. Did the disintegration of the Seljuks some how help the Mongols?

I always thought 3 was special in Europe because of Christianity, but apparently pre-Christian Scandinavians considered it a "magic number" as well. Was this actually widespread among humans more generally? And if so, why?

According to the documentary I am watching on Netflix, "Apocalypse : World War II", this happened. But I vaguely remember this is a myth. Anyone know details?

I know a lot of Egyptians seem to identify as "Arabs" but I'm not sure if that really goes much beyond sharing a same language (and influence by Arab nationalist leaders such as Abdelnasser).

But are Egyptians actually (genetically I guess, or however else you measure it) Arab? Don't they have more in common with other African nations or are they unrelated to either and have their own Ancient Egyptian heritage?

Egypt has been invaded by quite a number of countries so obviously they share a mix of each but if someone has any statistics I would appreciate that =)

I read today,in a Dutch magazine about history (Historisch Nieuwsblad, December 2015), a article about Palestinian terrorism in the seventies. It said that the Sovjet-Union helped terrorist organisation Al Saiqa with training their men in camps near Moscow. And the Eagles of Palestinian Revolution, part of Al Saiqa, did some attacks in Western Europe. One of the reasons for the attacks was to stop the Russian jewish emigration to Israel. My question is why the Sovjet-Union didn't want their Jews to Israel?

This may have been covered before so pardon my ignorance. I've always learned about the shifts in early modern thinking from a western perspective but never from an eastern one. Why was the re-discovery of Aristotle so important to the west when the east had the works all along and never had their own renaissance?

Hi everyone, I'm doing a paper on the night of the Sicilian Vespers in 1282, but I just can't seem to settle with a research question I need to answer in my paper...

I'm more interested in what happened before then I thought maybe someone here could help me try and formulate a question, or give an interesting insight about the subject so I can specify on what I'd like to research within the theme.

I've already written a preface but I just don't know what I'm going to focus on.

I'm only supposed to use literature about the subject and not do actual field-research or anything spectacular.

Me: I'm a first years history bachelor student living in the Netherlands, for my paper I've read Steven Runcimans book called 'The Sicilian Vespers: a history of the mediterranean world in the later thirteenth century'.

From a strategical standpoint, it would have been better if Japan invaded Russia from the East so Stalin couldn't move his Siberian reserve units to the West; making Germany's invasion easier. If Hitler didn't order the his troops to stop before Moscow, Germany very well could've taken it and the tide of the war would've been changed. This could've been the few times in history where Russia could've successfully been conquered having two major powers attacking it on both fronts. Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor forced Germany to declare war on the US which eventually would lead them both to be defeated.

How did places like China and Russia come to have so much land under their rule? As an American, I know the story behind my country's size: colonialism, disease, and manifest destiny. What about those large countries in the old world? It seems to me like most large empires have a tendency to fall apart so what's up with these exceptions?

I did some light research on Japanese foreign policy post-1960 recently and read over The Japan That Can Say No: Why Japan Will Be First Among Equals (full title, I just call it The Japan That Can Say No). I thought it was very interesting, but I'd like to know if it reached a US audience at all. Given the time period I'm curious if any newspapers covered it or if any Congressmen were outraged by its content. It's before my time, so I'd also like to know if there was a public reaction.

I recall one of the reasons Rohm was executed was that he's considered "too socialist". Hitler had the backing of industrialists, and those industrialists didn't like Rohm's view. After Nazi became the ruling party, Hitler seem to remove a lot of his old comrades from a position of power.

So how close (or far?) the resemblance between the pre-ruling and ruling Nazi Party's ideology? How ideologically similar was Ernst Rohm and later Nazi political elites (Himmler, Goring, etc)?

I was watching Star Wars Episode III (I know...) last night, and in the commentary George Lucas made mention that part of his inspiration for the Emperor was Richard Nixon, and his attempt or desire to have the Constitution changed so he could run for a third term. I could find no references to this when I did a google search. Is there truth to this, or is his memory faulty?

So I learned I have a pretty direct tie to the Uniacke's. I've heard they are fairly well known for a couple reasons. I was wondering if you guys could point me in any sort of direction to learn about them. Or any knowledge you have about them would be appreciated.
