Did the religion ignore it, assimilate it into the pantheon (like Islam and Djinn), attempt to exterminate it, tolerate it? Was magic assumed to stem from the religion's cosmology or did it come from outside of it? Did the magic supplement areas where the religion didn't have power, or did it exist for another reason?
Edit: didn't realize headline flair got added automatically, sorry for the redundant title.

My great grandmother immigrated to the United States from the Syrian Arab Rebublic in 1900 (according to her immmigration paperwork), and her branch of my family always considered themselves as being of Lebanese decent. I know that Lebanon was not an independent state, but in trying to do some research on the region at that time I've become somewhat lost.
I would like to learn more information on
Thank you

Intrigued as to the reasoning behind deliberate discrimination and oppression by the protestants in Ireland. All perspectives welcome. If anybody has primary sources on the topic that would be very useful too. Thanks!

I would like to learn more about the pre-Colombian history of the native tribes of North America, particularly the Iriquois, Cherokee, and Lakota Sioux. What books should I read?

Note I mean historians that have Marxist views, not merely historians of Marxism.

Were factories forced to retool for wartime production or did they do so by choice? If they were forced, did they have a say in what they produced? And if it was by choice was it more due to patriotism or did it just makes sense financially due to government contracts?

I am studying Latin and Roman history, and I would like to know about the jobs and lives of those other than senators and farmers, just to get some historical context.

I have read a fair amount about the Vietnam War but most of it has been anecdotally driven. Any recommendations for a more general analysis of the war as a whole from start to finish?

Its kind of a wordy questions but what i'm getting at is the fact that we really do not know anything about the Minoans. We can not read Linear-A and all we have are a bunch of murals and statues. We're not even sure what most of their architecture would have looked like.
Yet it is common to hear people talk about how it was a matriarchal society that worshiped a goddess (don't think i have ever heard which one).
So my question is "Excavations of Minoan ruins really took off during the 60'-70's which was also a time of great civil rights and feminist rights movements in America. So could it be that some of the archaeologist/historians projected their own beliefs onto their findings and that is why we have the idea of the Minoans being some kind of ancient matriarchal egalitarian society?"
Because as far as i know the only things we can really tell is that they liked boats, liked dolphins, were semi-warlike, and had a game that involved jumping over bulls.

More particularly, I know the pyramids were thousands of years old at the time of the peak of Roman power. But nonetheless did educated people in Roman times or earlier have a sense that they were relatively close to the darkness of prehistory? Or did that seem as far away to them as it does to us today?

So, a friend of mine is currently doing some Spartan diet that he found in a magazine. I am unconvinced that its authentic, so I was wondering if AH could shed some light on what a Spartan warrior would have eaten day by day? What about his family?

Were there any traditions that sprang up around a Confederate independence day, or was there even such a day--did the states each celebrate the date of their own secession? What about July 4th--did they celebrate that during the war, or was that too Northern?

Inspired by an ELI5-thread from earlier I would really like to know the origins of the phrase. Hopefully with some sources in order for the actual answer to be presented.

Hey guys,
I've heard quite a bit about the Swiss pikemen in the past couple days, and was just wondering what everyone's take on them is. Why were they so good? What made them so special? Major battles? Also, how did the invention of guns aid them in their fights?
Thanks :)

I guess that native papuans had extensive contact with Indonesian people further east, and that this would explain why they weren't victim of massive plagues brought by european contact, but how extensive was this immunity ? For instance native papuans didn't had at my knowledge domesticated animals (apart from semi-domesticated pigs ?) so were they immune to all the illnesses brought by europeans ? Does that also concerned other melanesian people which lived in more isolated places, such as Kanaks, Solomon islanders or Guadalcanal natives ?
Also, I guess that Papua wasn't extensively colonized due to its harsh climate, rough geography and hostile native, but how true was that ? Were there other factors that played in dutch and germans not populating and modifying those lands as british did for Australia or french did in western Africa ?

In my Political Science class, my professor (whom is pretty conservative) said that back during the 50's - 80's, much of academia had a pro-Marxist bias and therefore tried to hide many of the failures of the Soviet Union and many of the other communist states. While I know that most of Academia tends to be left leaning, is there any truth to this claim?

Union deaths amount to ~665,000. Confederate deaths amount to ~485,000. This seems very strange to me knowing that:

Would the language differ as much as say American modern English and Victorian "proper" English, or since it's remained in the same location has the change been unnoticeable?
