I am currently finishing up my minor in history and have always had this question. My future career is in insurance, and the history of the field has always been of interest to me. Most history courses don't touch on insurance, so I did some personal research and was not able to turn up as much as I would have liked. Any input is greatly appreciated!

I was just reading an article that posited that the origins of this tradition are lost to time and wondered if that were true. And if so, how far are we indeed able to trace it before it's just not known?

I'm aware that many of these cultures did not leave written records, and that the decentralised nature of these religious practices may make generalising statements about their reactions difficult, but I would be interested to hear about the reaction of pre-Christian Europeans to the spread of Christianity across the continent.

In relation to the German command, focusing on lower level initiative via the Auftragstaktik how was the Soviet Command structure at the Tactical level of war? Was it similar to the french were lower level initiative was almost prohibited to enable the proper allocation of resources (ww1ish) or was it truly its own, working in conjunction with the soviet "deep battle" theory

I've heard that when humans first began growing crops en masse they suffered malnutrition diseases and stunted growth/bad teeth. Is this true?

It sorta seems to make sense from an armchair. Switching from a diverse hunter gatherer diet to mostly wheat or rice or whatever would probably have consequences.

I was reading about a voice actress arrested for cocaine use, and it occurred to me that I have no knowledge of how the current state of Japanese drug laws came to be. This question is very general I understand, but there is a lot to know, I'm sure. When were various specific drugs banned, and under what contexts? What was the attitude toward these substances before prohibition?

There is only one book in the wiki that focuses on Central Asia: "Afghanistan a Cultural and Political History." I suspect books concerning the Soviet Union or Mongol conquests mention Central Asia as well, but I find it odd that there is an entire region of the world essentially missing from the book list - especially when it seems that great care was taken to represent all other areas of the world. Just thought I'd point it out.

Does anyone have recommended reading on Central Asian history? I just read "The Great Game" by Hopkirk and I heard that "Kim" was also a good read. How about any books that talk about the Silk Road or civilizations of the steppe?

Italy Invaded Greece on October 28th 1940 (Ochi day). Germany joined the invasion on 6th of April 1941. The vast Majority of Greek Forces surrendered on 20 April 1941 while the last part of Greece (Crete) was conquered on June 1 1941.

Operation Barbarossa started on June 22 1941. Some historians in Greece argue that Operation Barbarossa was postponed (at least partially) due to the fact that it took much longer that initially calculated to conquer Greece.

Does that theory have any real basis? Is it national propaganda to make the Greeks feel special about resisting for so long?

So one thing I frequently hear with regards to the USSR is that everyone got paid the same amount of money for doing different jobs. However, it's clear that many were better off under the Bolsheviks than other were, so what was pay like? Was it a government sponsored meritocracy? Were all wages the same? In Dutch highschool I was thought that the main cause was jealousy from other countries and a failing foreign policy, and that it nearly destroyed the Netherlands. Is this accurate, or is it a very Dutch view on the events?

Nations like Nazi Germany, the UK and America all enacted policies that encouraged eugenics. Did they work in any effect, to lower the level at which genetic disabilities were prevalent? Or do we not have the data?

Forgive for an obvious question, as I dont know much about military strategy, but why didnt, in WW1 when they wanted to attack an enemy trench didn't they continue to bomb the enemy trench with artillery, meaning your enemy has to shelter underground, while your troops advance safely across no-mans land and then stop the artillery barrage just in time when they have safely reached the enemies trench.
