Recently an interesting question was posted here. Many of the answers essentially came down whether the regimes in Spain, Portugal, and even Japan where really fascist. While I don't doubt the word of more educated historians, I am starting to think my high school education was too liberal with the application of the word fascist. Taking into consideration the examples of fascist and non-fascist dictatorships during and before WWII, how would you define fascism and who would you consider solidly fascist or simply an axis allied dictatorship.

So, off the back of the most recent USSR posts, I can't help but notice the fact that Kazakhstan remained (at least one of) the last country(ies) in the USSR.
What ive been wondering is why they didn't choose to become part of the Russian Federation, aside from the USSR (if that was an option) - considering the less than 1st world state of Kazakhstan at the minute (excluding Cold War definitions of 1st 2nd and 3rd world).
Was Kazakhstan in itself still feeling "Russian"? Or was there a situation in which Kazakhstan citizens found themselves choosing to be separate? Or did they have that choice at all - to any extent?

Supposedly, Lamborghini (primarily a tractor manufacturer) bought a Ferrari and had some complaints, which he took directly to Enzo Ferrari.
Signor Ferrari responded that he didn't need a mere tractor maker telling him how to make sports cars. This so enraged Lamborghini that he started his own car company.
Is there any evidence that this actually happened?

Reading about the rise of mass politics and nationalism in the Arab world I repeatedly come across comments about the importance of urbanisation, and sometimes prolitereanisation, in creating an arena in which mass politics could take off. However, there's often very few hard statistics on said issues. Could anyone either provide or point me towards where I could find such things.

I found this article by the US Holocaust memorial museum. So not some runt of the street. it is talking about freemasons murdered by the Nazis, and gives numbers of up to 200k people.
Now I thought that freemasonry for long didn't exist anymore in the 1930ies, and that it was some kind of elitist society. 200.000 people is nether secretive, nor very elitary.
Can anyone give me some historical context etc. I just read this the first time and it feels kinda weird.

i recently watched the beginning of the thief and the cobbler (developed from 1964 to 1995) which seems to either be a major influence on disney's aladdin (1992), or adapted from the same source. i thought the evil zig zag's appearance and character might have been split into jafar and the genie, but wondered if the idea of a blue jinn is ancient and independent from either.
i saw this image on wikipedia from 1568 that shows one blue jinn out of 8 or 9 brightly colored jinn (red, orange, mauve, teal). this other piece on wikipedia from the 16th century shows six strangely colored jinn, speckled and red and orange and an inhuman white.
my impression is that (by the 16th century) jinn were depicted as horned, strangely colored, human-like inhuman creatures.
have jinn always been strange and brightly colored? when did blue jinn first appear?
did blue jinn begin to dominate at some point before the last 20 years? (or am i simply blinded by disney's aladdin?)
p.s. if it's not too much trouble, please give warning before any spoilers of the thief and the cobbler. i have yet to watch the end.
p.p.s. i am now also curious about the gold wrist bands. are they part of a cultural (arabic?) dress? a symbol of the jinn's imprisonment? also the horns, and the bottles...
so, i am also happy to receive information or early examples of any specific aspect of jinn appearance, beyond their blueness.

A proffessor got a giggle out of the class when he told us that. In England they just screamed "WATCH OUT!" or something like that, while in Germany they were more organized, with inclined streets and an exact hour to throw it.

The American Civil War seems to be rather distinct from most civil wars. In it, there are two organized, legitimate (sort of) governments both fielding armies with a proper chain of command. Each meets the definition of a state (control of violence within a defined territory). Most civil wars, by contrast, seem to devolve rather quickly into competing factions which barely overlap, and often lead to the rise of warlordism, often accompanied by the collapse in authority of the central government. Examples might include Spain, Congo, Liberia, etc. Furthermore, the major English speaking civil wars (England 1642-1651, American War of Independence 1775-1783, America 1861-1864) seem to follow this pattern.
Does this pattern actually exist and, if so, why does it? Additionally, should these wars be classified as different from civil wars?
