Why are the hadith considered acceptable in Islam?

Many of the justifications for moral decisions in Islam is supported by hadiths. There is a big debate at the moment over the actions of ISIS and whether it is even allowed. But my question why are hadiths used in islamic scholarship at all? The Bible has large amounts of Apocrypha that are not included in the official canon but contain stories of the disciples and jesus. How come Salafist who seek the most basic, 'authentic' form of Islam use texts that are not strictly the 'Word of God'?

Why didn't the European colonizing nations use catamarans in their fleets during the 16th-18th centuries?

They surely encountered other peoples who had developed the much more stable boat design, and would have had significantly more room for equipment, provisions, crew quarters, and cargo in addition to the ability to cope with rough seas much better.

Their merchant fleets could have carried much more and their naval fleets would be able to operate independent of shore for much longer.

Just something I've wondered for a long time...

resubmit because I flipped 1&6 in the title originally

Were any well-known monarchs aware of their styles during their lifetimes? What were their reactions? Did they ever attempt to quash, alter, or even issue their own styles?

For example, did Ivan the Terrible know he was feared (terrible in the sense of causing terror), and relish the name? How did Pepin the Short feel about his style, if he even knew? Etc.

How extensive and fatal was Anti-Loyalist violence during the American Revolution?

I understand mobs of Patriots would harass, and at times inflict injury upon Loyalists throughout the Revolution but it is difficult to find any kind of statistics on number of occurrences and fatalities. How often did they outright kill Loyalists? Was this widely reported / hidden?

As a bit of unnecessary background on my question, I'm locked in debate with a friend who believes that the American Revolution was bloodier and more cruel to civilians of both sides than the French Revolution. I have not found many sources to indicate that the American Revolution saw the same kind of widespread killings as we saw in Paris.

Where was the 7 Year War actually fought and, other than the French and British, who were the main actors?

Every time I read into the 17-19th century, the 7 years war rears it's ugly head. The only problem is that every time it does, a different theatre, group of people and set of aims are said to be of primary importance. This ambiguity has thoroughly confused me.

So, I would be hugely greatfull if anyone could give me a rundown of what actually went on where with who on what side. Further reading recommendations, especially podcasts or audio books, would be great.

In tenth grade, when we were learning about the Chinese dynasties, my AP World History teacher mentioned that the families that ruled (Shang, Zhou, Qin, Han, etc.), didn't just disappear after being phased out by the dynastic cycle. Where are they now?

For example, have any died out? Are any hated for their legacies? Do people know/care about them any more?

Freemasons, Illuminati, secret societies in the 1700s.. Not conspiracy theory related..

So in the 1700s there were 'secret societies' in modern times when you google 'secret societies' pretty much all of it is conspiracy theories.. I'm referring to the Illuminati and Bavarian Illuminati (I have no clue if its one and the same), masons/freemasons.. I know our founding fathers were freemasons and in secret societies like George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and others.. In Europe it had great adepts such as: Beethoven, Cagliostro, Comte de St. Germain, Goethe, Mesmer and Mozart. Great musicians and influential people in that time are linked to freemasonry or secret societies like the Illuminati, what did they do back then? Why did they have what are now historical legends and what is the modern day equivalent to freemasons and illuminati like it was back in the 1700s

I've heard they had meetings in secret to escape persecution from the RCC (Roman Catholic Church) and I believe they were all probably open minded the RCC probably called them crazy but was in fact 'ahead of their time'.. So if those same people I mentioned grew up in todays time instead of the 1700s what equivalent to the secret societies would they join if any?
