What was the name of Charlemagne in his mother tongue?

I've read in another reddit thread that he spoke Old High German natively and that this language was important to him since he ordered/encouraged people to not only write books in Latin but also in Old High German. Therefore I'm really interested in what he called himself in inner monologues and what people of his home region called him. It's even more interesting as his name is ironically widely known in a dozen languages other than his native one. I already found out that 'the'='der' and 'great'='groz', but unsure how to nominalize 'groz' properly and which version of Charles (Carl/Karl/Karel/...) is correct. First try: 'Carl der grozze'. Second try (thanks /u/Zither13): 'Kerl der grozze' (still unsure about 'grozze').

Also: was Charles a chosen name when he became a king (i.e. like popes choose their names)? If so, what was his name when he was a child? Answer (thanks /u/Whoosier): he didn't have another name.

Why exactly didn't Stalin separate Xinjiang from China after the end of World War II?

After all, Xinjiang was solidly Uyghur-majority during this time and it's not like China or anyone else would have stopped Stalin from doing this.

Any thoughts on this?

Texas Nationalists claim that Texas has an implicit right to legally secede from the US because it entered voluntarily. Was this claim ever formally asserted by Texas or challenged by the US?

Some other questions:

  • When did this claim originate, and by whom?

  • Was it asserted during Texas' official secession? If so, did the Union ever challenge the claim?

Did Plutarch expect a Life to be read in one sitting?

I have the Modern Library edition, and there are no subdivisions whatsoever, no versing, nothing to give someone a chance for a break, save paragraphs. I wondered if Plutarch intended people to read a Life in one sitting?

What exactly happened with Leeuwarden with beer in 1487?

So I was on the Wikipedia page for [July 24], and saw the uncited claim that:

1487 – Citizens of Leeuwarden, Netherlands strike against a ban on foreign beer.

I googled around about this, but most sources were either completely uncited/ taken from Wikipedia, or in Dutch. What was the Leeuwarden beer strike, and is it as awesome as it sounds? (Because striking for your right to beer sounds awesome) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_24)

Why is the history of the Islamic world so difficult to get a hold of? Is there a documentary or source that is the go to because it seems to be difficult for me to understand exactly what has happened from circa 600 to about 1900.

I recently did a college research paper on the history of Tyre Lebanon and I found most of its 6,000 year old history was pretty straight forward except for the Islamic history? Is there a documentary or book about the history of Islam. The caliphates, wars, geography of what and where events happened. Is this information an enigma because of bad record keeping or Judaeo-christian preference of history?

What kind of archetypes did children pretend to be in Medieval Europe?

Growing up as a young boy, I and my friends often pretended to be one of an array of archetypes: warrior, cop, robber, cowboy, Indian, knight, spaceman, etc. Similarly, young girls pretended to be princesses, fairies, mermaids, etc.

What archetypes, if any, did children pretend to be in Medieval Europe?

Old Graveyard

I found an old graveyard behind my house. The graves are marked with rocks and stones, which have years carved into them dating from the 1600-1700s. I live in Western North Carolina, and I am trying to figure out who these graves belong to without digging anything up. I am planning to try to find the history of my property, but I have a feeling it will be difficult to trace that far back.

Any help is appreciated.

Did eunuchs exist in the UK? When? How common were they? Why?

I've never heard of eunuchs in Britain in the same way there were eunuchs in China, Byzantium etc. Was it a thing? If so, when- when did it stop, when was it introduced? If not, why did some countries have eunuchs and others didn't? Thinking of the theory about the Pardoner in Chaucer being a eunuch.
