My question here, is were armies such as the Roman, Macedonian, Greek, Persian etc. Capable of issuing orders in reaction to what was happening on a battlefield? Or was the plan set in stone before battle, and the commanders hoped they had the better plan?

Looking for a book on the Boer War. There are quite some available, so I'm having a hard time choosing one. Any suggestions would be more than welcome. An introductory level book would be the best as I'm delving into this topic for the first time.

I recently heard about the works of David McCullough and was thinking about reading his books (especially the one about the Wright Brothers). My question is how good are his books (in terms of historical accuracy)?

Were they starved and wearing tattered uniforms or were they still in sufficient shape to fight effectively?

In school, I've seen all these documentaries explaining that Crusaders brought back certain things from their campaigns in the Middle East, but they never talked in-depth about what they brought back, only stating that it would help Europe's growth technology wise. How true is this statement, and if they did bring back things, what specifically did they bring back that would help them? (e.g. manuscripts? siege weaponry? forging methods? etc.)

I am looking for a good book on the Knights Hospitaller. I see one by Helen Nicholson that has good reviews but I was wondering if any historians have a good take on the subject.

It would make sense to me that English might have changed more than other languages due to various cultures ruling what is now England as well as the language having been spread globally to some extent for centuries by now.

I suppose someone could be considered fluent in English and yet not be able to completely understand a Shakespearean play, is this in any way unique? Are there other languages where the "line" that clearly represents the same language but is largely unfamiliar to a native speaker is noticeably further back in time or closer to the present day?
