To my understanding they were a people who lived in what is today Yemen. I've heard that religion also had certain holy cites that would become important to Islam. Their location would suggest that they enjoyed the wealth of trade. Other than this though I know nothing of them.

Who were they? Were they Arabs or a similar people? Their location is by some important sea routes, so were they traders? What was their culture and religion like? And how did a Roman Invasion of the region fail?

I was watching a documentary on the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011, and the narrator mentioned that a total evacuation of Tokyo was a possibility if things had worsened, saying that it would be "unprecedented in modern history."

That got me wondering about not-so-modern history, so I thought I'd ask here. I'm specifically curious about near-total abandonment, rather than something like the evacuation of children from London during WWII.

Did submarines sail with convoys and torpedo hostile subs? Was the technology even there at all for sub vs sub combat during WW2?

OK so this question is slightly open ended, but I am interested in what are the current major trends in academic history.

The 20th century saw numerous trends, from social history, the history of marginalised peoples, the study of long trends (annales), microhistory, greater focus on non-western history, and no doubt lots of other things which as a layperson I am unaware of.

What has been happening in the 21st century so far?

• What areas of history are only just being explored?

• Are there any new approaches to studying history?

• Have their been influential changes in our perspective and understanding of important, well researched historical questions?

I've never really heard of Romania claiming to be heirs of Rome (or the 'Third Rome'), despite their Latin-ness. Was this ever the case, or did Romania simply emerge with a unique identity?

I've heard the claim many times that during the development of the atomic bomb it was feared that it could chain react and detonate the atmosphere of the Earth. Ignoring if it could have happened or not, are there any sources that show someone actually claimed this could happen?

From what I've learned, Britain invaded Iceland in 1940 partly due to concern that Germany would soon try to establish a military presence there. Did they actually have any such plans that we know of?

I overheard someone the other day saying that at the sane time as the slave trade between Africa and North America (not exclusively), which most people refer to when they talk about slavery, was going on, there was a larger amount of slave trade from eastern Europe to the middle east. Is this true, and if so please can you tell me more about it?
