When did this practice start? Was there ever a Bob's Smith Shop sign or anything like that? Or did you just know people by name and location. What about advertising their business? Sales/discounts? Specials e.g. 'just got a whole lot of iron, horeshoes buy three get the fourth free'?

I know my question may not be specific enough to warrant a specific answer, but I am curious about why there are infantry forces assigned to ships ("marine" units) if there are already combat-proficient sailors and land-infantry units that could accomplish the same function of combat. Why is there a need for marine-type units on a ship?

Hello everyone. I'm curently in the process of writing a movie that takes place in the south of the United States during the Great Depression. One of the characters is a Bluesman and for the story I'd need to know what were the views of the Church on this music ? Was it repressed or they just didn't care ? Whenever we look at certain periods of Roman/Greek or other ancient history of Europe, we get this sense that it was a thriving time, culturally.

In contrast, Medieval Europe was constantly riddled in war and it was stuck that way for hundreds of years.

Feudal societies seem to warmonger a lot, but they could also thrive culturally (Japan comes to mind).

Henry Avery kicked off the golden age of piracy and was an idol too many of the great pirates of the Caribbean. Are there any stories or first person accounts of what life was like on Madagascar after Avery established his colony there?

I remember someone telling me about how the U.S. had a new embassy built in the 1960's in Moscow but was built with Russian contractors, and the Americans knew it would be bugged. How did countries in similar examples go about their diplomatic and politically sensitive business?

I have a basic understanding of U.S. history and politics(the intro college courses), so I pretty much just know enough to be dangerous. Lately, especially on the more political subreddits there has been a lot of arguing about party realignment, e.g. "The Republicans freed the slaves!" "They did, but they would be Democrats today!", etc.

So, has there been any significant party realignment since the formation of the Republican and Democratic parties?

Hi guys, I am from Sweden and while we had a lot of history education covering most of the world, but I feel fairly ignorant about the history in Asian countries, including China and India, which are the most populous nations in the world. I am not the best reader in the world, but I figured there may be some good documentaries I could watch? I am interested in both modern history and a more long-term overview, but keep in mind I am kinda new to the material ( I did Physics at uni).

So did different cultures/societies on different sides of the planet have some idea of N,E,S,W before international travel etc was common? They'd know about sunrise and sunset but did they understand the whole magnetic North bit also?
