Many years ago when I was still in High School, one of my History teachers told us that the Civil War was bad for us in terms of international relations. Other countries saw us going to war as hypocritical due to the way we separated from England. And, in fact, as I recall, he quoted the following passage from the Declaration of Independence: "That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it."

According to my teacher, the Federal government's policy was destructive to the South's economy and way of life, thus they had the right to leave the Union, as per one of our own country's founding documents.

Is there any truth to this at all? Was preserving the Union seen as hypocritical by anyone, foreign or domestic? Googling this hasn't turned much up.

I always hear about diseases such as small pox ravaging native populations, but did any diseases cause significant harm to the Europeans? particularly viculent diseases just not tend to thrive in the smaller tribal die to not having continuous avenues of infection, or is in just a matter of things not recorded in history?

Is there any evidence the US government financially or otherwise offered incentives for these kinds of songs to help promote the space race the US was in with USSR at the time or is it simply coincidence?

With the recent tragedy in Charleston this week some of my co-workers and myself started discussing the long history of South Carolina and racial tensions. I don't want this thread to become a debate about racism in its current form or any current events.

However, during lunch today, myself and several co-workers got into a discussing regarding the reasons for the outbreak of the Civil War. I myself grew up all over the U.S, but mostly in Virginia. My co-workers various regions of the U.S.

The discussion was, did the North REALLY care about slave-rights (my opinion was not really) or was it the best way to cripple the south economically and thus gain more power by dismantling their labor system and relationship with the British textile industry?

I will firstly state that I am by no means an expert in Civil War history and thus why I come to you guys.

It seems to me that being forced to leave the USSR in 1972 was more of a reward than a punishment, and potentially embarrassing for the USSR. Why did the Soviets want him to leave, instead of sending him to a gulag to die, away from the public eye?

I always hear he was the great negotiator, and he's the role model of today's right wing. All things aside, despite just 'being president' at the time of the USSR's decline, did he partake in any major mission that was relevant to the breakup of the Soviet Union?

I'm looking for a good academic source that answers the depth of this question. I've read a lot about ancient sites with astronomical alignments (such as Nabta playa) and how astronomy was important for establishing calendars (such as the Egyptian calendar based on the heliacal rising of Sirius in ancient Egypt) but I can't seem to find a source specifically regarding the importance of astronomy in shaping early civilization. It seems evident that it did have a huge influence on early civilization ie the astrotheology/astrolatry of the ancients and the fact that it was important for timekeeping, establishing calendars, celestial navigation, etc... If you know of any good material on this subject matter, I'd appreciate it. :)

I used to live next to one of the survivors from the USS Indianapolis. I was too young to really appreciate the significance of it and to ask him what I should have. Hopefully some of you can help me better understand what happened:

1. There is controversy over the subsequent court martial and the orders of the ship. Is there any consensus on who was to blame and whether the captain should have been disciplined?

2. How did the navy actually lose track of a ship for so long? Was it just terrible luck? Incompetence?

3. Was this a well known event after the war?

I'm already decently versed on communism, Marxist-Leninism, anarchism, and other left tendencies (in comparison with 99.5% of people who think communism means state-run economy and anarchism means no rules). I'm interested in how these ideologies have attemptedly been implemented by various groups throughout history, and the variations that emerged.

It's just interesting to see how the ideology becomes morphed; nobody even interprets/uses it the same way, even within one organization, and it's interesting to see what social conditions caused this seemingly esoteric, German (hence Western) ideology* to be embraced by so diverse peoples worldwide. I don't quite get how ultra-nationalist societies like Mao (where did that nong even hear of Marxism?) could get China to all of a sudden rally behind this very foreign conception of government, but that said I literally don't know shit. Hence this request.

*Now there exists a subdiscipline of Marxism called Western Marxism so perhaps Marxist scholars would have contention with me calling Marxism a western ideology. I'm curious.

I wanted to ask a community of historians this for a while, glad I found this sub here. My co-worker who is working on a book about this very same idea is understandably very passionate about this idea and I just can't figure out if he is just plain old passionate or plain old crazy.

He brings up numerous parallels he believes that exist between both cultures. As a guy with no history background, all I can do is either choose to believe or not believe. Googling the various names and ideas he brings up routinely takes me to dubious sites that are trying to sell me healing stones! So I was really glad to find this sub here! :D :D

Any thoughts or comments on this subject?
