Polarm formations were used during the late middle ages, but why? polarms were longs spears and plate armored knights were immun to bladed weapons such as spears.

if an armored knight approached a polearm formation, its not like the guys with the polearms can stab him to death, becuase spear thrusts couldnt penatrate plate armor.

so why? knights in armor should have been able to chase away polearm formations by the fact that spears could not hurt armored knights.

(I know that knights had gaps in thier armor, but its not realistic to assume that a polarm could stab with enough percision to get into those gaps, and knights would often cover those gaps with steel protectors anyway)

So when were they invented? When they were invented, did they still have to clean the barrel after every shot or every magazine? Or did they just insert the bullets and shoot? By the way, I mean when you put multiple bullets in at once, not when you put one bullet per shot. thanks.

Sorry. Not a good title, but my point is - All sorts of coins and artifects from all over the world are found where they originally shouldn't be, so it means it was brought there by a trader or a merchant. My question is - if a Roman trader came to your village somewhere in the Baltics, offered a coin (gold, silver, whatever material) for your goods, then how do you decide how much is the coin worth? What do you do with the foreign coin as it holds no material value?

As the title asks, when did the word "hippy" become a negative word, like it is today. Of course there are certain members of our society on the fringe, who see it as a positive word, but it seems that in popular media today, it is a pegorative term for "laid-back" people with no direction in life.

I was hoping someone could expand a bit on the role of marine clocks in gaining the naval upper hand during the age of colonialism. I remember reading some basic info about how oceanic navigation had often before been based on travelling along a specific line of latitude, giving navies predictable places to wait for an enemy, but the longitudinal clock freed navies from this constraint, but I haven't been able to find much information on that. H4, the quintessential timepiece by Harrison wasn't finished till the 1760s, and that the French were close on his heels.

How much of an edge did this give the British at first, and how long till they were adopted in other navies (or in colonial company/merchant ships)? Was it the jumpstart that the chronometer gave them that let the Brits gain naval dominance, or was the technology rapidly disseminated amongst all the colonial powers and allow for expansion of already significant colonial claims without major changes in the balance of power?

There's a brief passage about him in "The Right Stuff," noting him as successful yet accident-prone, which I found interesting. There should be plenty of primary documents about him but I haven't the slightest idea where to start even accessing them.

I'm not sure if this question has been asked in advanced so I'm sorry if it is but I just want to know. Who were the people that Hitler looked up to? It could be former world leaders, philosophers, artists, scientists, etc. But who did Hitler look up to throughout his life?

Looking at France's military history, it doesn't seem terrible. They had some catastrophic moments certainly (Napoleon's invasion of Russia and the existence of Vichy France come to mind), but those are easily offset by their great moments (their performance in the First World War, their role in the American revolution, and their victories against just about everyone during the First Republic for example).

Where and when did we start to look at France as a military embarrassment?
