I've read the ancient sources and I was wondering if any recent hisorians have stated their views. I want to establish a better understanding as I'm doing my personal research on Spartacus.

Robert Dodd's life is currently being researched by local historians here in the UK, however, very little is known about him. Indeed, it is my understanding that none of his poetry can be located.

Just watched a commercial with people sun-tanning on the beach; is this a recent phenomenon or was it something that you could expect an ancient Roman or other historical person to enjoy?

Also, why was base 60 chosen over these, and how did it become so widespread?

I remember going to a museum as a kid and seeing this house. We got to take a tour through it. It was made entirely of aluminium. I remember the guide telling us they had to stop because of, i think world war 2, and the aluminium had to be used for planes.

The house had one bathroom, in the middle of the house, and there was one hallway on outer rim of the house. It was touted as the future home. It would collect rain water from it's roof. the bedrooms had these "dressers" that had shelves that you pressed a button and they moved using a motor.

I have googled, and duckduckgoed everywhere and I cannot find it.

I'm looking for a broad overview here, and I understand that probably nobody wants to write me a book in the comments :) I found Pierre Goubert's "The French Peasantry in the Seventeenth Century". I'm wondering if that would generally be considered a good place to start, or if people would add recommendations.

The types of questions I'd hope this book would help answer:

• To what social/economic institution did a typical peasant owe his strongest/weakest allegiances? (ie immediate family, village, church, religion, local lord, employer, army unit, nation, etc) And why?

• What did a typical peasant enjoy? What did he fear?

• What types of constraints informed economic life? What sorts of desirable items and services were easy for a peasant to get? Which ones were more difficult?

• What would a typical peasant hope to do with their life?
