A significant amount of the writings from the ancient world in particular are lost to us. Are all the writings that survive useful simply because of that fact, or is there any that we could describe as being useless? I was just curious.

I thought Germany and Italy were on one side but i saw some pictures of German soldiers killing Italians and Italians killing Germans during WW II. So can someone explain me what happened between these two sides ?

Listening to the SCOTUS proceedings in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges today, Justice Alito and Justice Kennedy stated that they believed that, as far as they knew, marriage (or the cultural equivalent) had always been between between opposite-sex individuals, even going as far to say that it is exclusively between one man and one woman.

I'm fairly confident in understanding the latter to be false, however, I am curious as to the first part. Was Justice Alito correct in saying that same-sex marriages have not existed before the present day?

As I understand it, there was some degree of conflict between the Greeks and Romans during the time of the Roman Empire. And that the Greeks didn't want to speak Latin. Correct me if I am wrong on this.

But can someone explain to me why this was? And if anyone can provide me with some further reading on the social standing of the Greeks and Romans at the time, that would be wonderful.

World War I seems to be one of the first wars where the mental health of soldiers is seriously addressed in historical discussion. Was PTSD an issue among soldiers in past centuries or is it a more recently studied phenomenon?

Sorry if this is too abstract, but it seems like most of the choices that people stress about, what job to go into, what religion to be, who to marry, where to live, whether to have kids, were mostly not there or at least a lot more limited. It also seems like the stress from choices is different then the stress of luck (will there be rain, will the army next door kill us, will I get sick).

I want to know if that stress was just placed on other decisions or if it just wasn't there to the degree we have now? Also when choice did start becoming a huge thing, what was the reaction?
