It might not be fair to say the Siegfried Line worked - Germany still lost - but from what I've read it was much more effective in stopping allied attacks than the Maginot line, despite the fact that the Maginot line was far superior in its hardened defenses. Why didn't the allies just go around, like Germany did with the Maginot Line?

Given the fact that Mass was conducted in Latin, the low level of literacy (and the lack of Bibles translated into the vernacular) and the absence of catechism, how much did ordinary people actually know about Christianity?

Were there widespread misconceptions or did popular beliefs generally match the Catholic orthodoxy?

I'm mainly thinking about Catholic Europe but I suppose the same question can be asked for Eastern Christianity.

We always hear that the US and USSR didn't want to fight in a direct war, because they feared WW3 would be nuclear war that ultimately will destroy human civilization through nuclear fire.

The US has had nuclear weapons since 1945 and the USSR since 1949. So I was wondering if there was a short time frame during the late 1940's or even early 1950's where they could conduct nuclear strikes against Soviet countries without the fear of full-scale nuclear retaliation that would result in the end of times or that the damage caused by the retaliation would at least be within acceptable boundaries.

I am looking for information that would help explain why some land owners and "Manors" would be motivated to sell land in scattered parcels. Specifically the Manor of Fordham in Westchester county NY in 1678. Why did settlers need salt marshes? Was the salt marsh used for feeding or for preparing the meat?

I am curious about the single engine fighters in WWII that had one big cannon.

I am speaking about the P-39, P-63, and Yak-9T/K type of configuration.

1. Where did the idea come from to install one large single gun instead of multiple smaller MGs/cannons?

2. Was the P-39 - which was developed earlier than the Yaks having this configuration - any influence on this development in the Red Air Force?

3. How did the use of these large guns change the types of engagements that the planes were useful for? I understand that the larger guns were intended to be able to take out heavier ground targets, but did their weight make the aircraft they were fitted to less suitable for turn and burn dogfighting? I would imagine it would effectively render them amazing bomber killers.

4. Are there other examples of this configuration (Higher than 30mm cannon) in single engine fighters than the ones I've listed? I know it was much more common in multi-engine airplanes, but as far as in single-engine - these are the only examples that I know of.

I've been reading The Emergence of Latin America in the Nineteenth Century. It deals with the war, but largely only in how it affected the bigger nations, Brazil and a little bit of Argentina. When it mentions Paraguay or Uruguay, it only deals with them in how they relate to Brazilian politics. So I was wondering what the impact was on those other three countries.

Did they carry the same seemingly universal reputation for old school coolness they have among legions of dads over the past few decades, or was mainstream society more mixed about them? Were they considered too raunchy or dissolute?
