21 years seem extremely long and honestly I can't imagine how both sides managed to resist such a long time.

What did the people and soldiers in Candia eat ? Were there reserves of food so big or did they find a way to smuggle food in the city ? What about water ? Also how did the authorities and the command inside the city dealt with diseases ? Surely so many men staying such a long time inside a city created diseases.

The sames goes for the Ottoman troops. According to Wikipedia they were around 60,000 men and to sustain them for two decades seem very expensive and hard to do. Plus I dare not imagine the surroundings of Candia after a couple of years of thousands of men foraging for food ...

And what was so important about Candia that make the Ottomans want it so much , Was it about the army inside, too important to let go ?

In every language that I'm aware of, names (for people) are usually separated by gender, even if there is some overlap (such as "Lesley" in American, now), or borrowing that consciously / intentionally goes against the usual gender association of a name.

Has this always been the case? Among cultures today, how much variation is there -- do some cultures today have very little or no gender-based separation of names? How much has this varied in the past, that we know of?

Did they just think of it as something inevitable, and burn until they tanned, or did they try to do something about it? Do we have any records of sailors complaining about burn, and/or records of remedies?

Is there an academic answer as to why Aristotle thought that the seas "beyond the pillars" were shallow muck?

Is it possible that Aristotle did not know the geography of Gibraltar?

I know they made landings in Southern France, but why didn't they flank the Germans by landing in Denmark or the Netherlands, for example? The only proposed landing that I know of is "Rädda Danmark" by the Swedes.

So I read today that Pope Francis called the killing of 1-1.5 million Armenians during World War One a genocide, and that this angered Turkey. My question is: How can Turkey legitimately refuse to call these killings genocide?

From what I've read, when the Allies invaded Morocco and Algeria, the French troops there continued to fight them off. In some cases, to the last man. Why didn't they just surrender, like the Italians?

Hi fellow historians, historians in spe (like me) I have to write an essay about a specific historical subject, mine being: Palaces In Early Modern History (1492-1789)

The essay i have to write has to be based on historical sources (Articles in history revues, Monographs, Dictionary notices) i must find on my own.

I don't have any difficulties in writing the essay myself, I'm just asking if you know any articles or monographs that are historically reliable and related to the mentioned subject. And of course available to read/buy on the internet.
