Mostly just asking due to a bit of family history that I was told over Easter. According to my family, my Grandfather Reginald Foster escaped from a German POW camp bordering the Black Forest in the last months of the war after being captured. He was with a few other British troops, but was the only one to survive the flight through the forest.

Curious whether this is a legitimate occurrence, since I've googled the subject and found no evidence. Of course, that isn't a hugely-deep source, but I felt that an account of escaped POWs struggling through the forest would have some notability at the time.

Since Lloyd Gorge was British PM during much of World War one and was one of the main leaders along with French counterpart Clemenceau pushing for harsh restrictions on Germany at the Paris peace conference, which are linked to the rise of Adolf Hitler and his pursuit of vengeance. Did Lloyd George hold any guilt for aiding the rise of Hitler and the breakout of the Second World War?

I'm writing a paper on politically motivated violence and crime in Russia leading up to the October revolution. I want to ask if somebody here has some good literature tips on the topic.

On a somewhat similar theme I found that personal writings and diaries of revolutionaries were a great source. Does somebody know of translated diaries etc. of Russian revolutionaries?

So there was a friend of the family called Vernon Moffit who served on the Australian army in WW2. I searched for his record online but I couldn't find it. He served on the Lithgow city council in New South Wales.

At his funeral years ago his brother told a story about towards the end of the war. Vern (who was a card carrying communist) was pulled out of his troop and put in to a new one to storm a beach after the War had ended due to a Japanese force which wouldn't surrender. On the way in the new group of men realised they were all communists and anarchists who had been put together for this mission.

In the end the Japanese surrendered before anything happened, but they were all convinced they were sent there to die.

Is there any record of this, or things like this? His brother (who was quite conservative) told the story and was quite angry about the whole thing.

I'm not really sure what they really do besides raids and discover. I'm watching Vikings at this very moment and trying to learn more about them.

I don't want to sound like a sociopath. Russia was the only real threat to global security after the fall of the Nazis. Stalin wasn't exactly best friends with the West. It seems a lot of global diplomacy could have been circumvented by using more nukes.

I'm currently reading a book about Louis XVIII which explains a lot about the consequences of Napoleon's fall for France and the new government. The first time the allies were quite generous and forgiving but the second time was a massive burden and punishment for the new government and the people.

Prussia seem to have lead the anti-France and anti-French negotiations, England watched a lot, Austria was double playing between ensuring that France never starts again and not letting Prussia be " the sole protector of the German people " but Russia was the most generous nation of the four. Though it imposed sanctions like the others ( reparations, occupation,...Etc ) it helped France not to be crushed by them. The Marquis of Bonnay declared that Russia was " France's ally " in these post-war negotiations bu why ?

What political elements lead Russia to be such " a friend " ? Surely the friendship between the Duke of Richelieu and Alexander I was not the sole reason ( though it must have helped! ) and the fact that French ambassador in Russia Pozzo di Borgo was getting along quite well with the Tsar was not a reason. Was is it something to do with Prussia ? Russia had to bring Britain on its side to prevent Prussia from getting too greedy with France so it must have been something to do with Prussia gaining more power ?

From what I've come across, it appears that CNN was really the only 24-hour cable news provider throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. I haven't been able to find much, however, on the channel's popularity. Can anyone explain the relative influence of cable news in the 1980s relative to other news outlets? Did most Americans still receive their news through newspapers or through network news?

I have read from a few sources. And they suggest that America tested secret weapons on Panamanians. During operation just cause. There are reports of cars sliced in half and melted bodies.

Further research doesn't seem to come up with cold hard facts confirming this.

How much truth do you think this holds?

I have some small knowledge of the feudal system, and when looking at maps (especially those made towards the end the HRE's existence) that most of the land was ruled by outside powers, while only some of the counties/duchies/kingdoms were, I assume, vassals of the HRE, while still being held by Prussia and Austria, which were not vassals of the HRE from my knowledge.

Both seem to be about unconstitutional segregation of interstate transport; was there any significant difference between the two rulings?
