I'm wondering whether an average Englishman would know that the Venetians and Ottomans were at peace again after the battle of Lepanto, or indeed know if England was on cordial relations with Denmark or Spain.

The international arena of the 16th and 17th centuries seems to change so much, how up to date would the average Englishman have been?

It seems like nearly every revolution has a period of extremely intense instability where the group that seized power consolidates power by eliminating its enemies, real or perceived. France had the Reign of Terror, Russia had the Red Terror, China had the Cultural Revolution, England had Oliver Cromwell. Yet, AFAIK, there was nothing comparable to this in America. There were of course political struggles between the Federalists and Anti-Federalists, but these never resulted in Thomas Jefferson or Alexander Hamilton declaring their opponents traitors to the revolution the way Robespierre or Lenin might have handled it. I'm aware of the Whiskey Rebellion, but that was quelled rather quickly, and most or the Founding Fathers were unanimous on suppressing it.

So what conditions in the American Revolution made it possible for the aftermath to be so relatively peaceful?

I'm watching a cooking show and the host repeats the old legend I've heard before about how the Aztec people chose the location of Tenochtitlán because of a a sign from the gods in the form of an eagle eating a serpent while perched on a cactus. Update: Thanks for the responses so far! Just some clarification, I was just curious as to who was the first Pope that we have the most concrete evidence actually existed. It always messed with my mind that we could trace the office back to St. Peter (and therefore Jesus Christ).
