I'm listening to a podcast on Burke and Hare, and though I have read up on the case before it suddenly occurred to me that there were all these graves that were emptied of their occupants, victims of grave robbers. What happened after that? I assume an overwhelming majority of the time the body was never recovered. Was the hole filled in and left empty? Would some sort of notice or marker be added to the headstone that the body had been stolen? For that matter, how often did this happen? Are there great sections of Scottish graveyards that consist of headstones and no bodies?

Edit: I am aware that Burke and Hare were murderers and not grave robbers, I am interested in the aftermath of those who were.

If I remember correctly, there were all sorts of terrible experiments done on some of the people who were in concentration camps. Were any discoveries made that affect how people are medically treated today?

Sorry for the morbid question, but in light of the deadly house fire in Brooklyn over the weekend, I've been wondering about the history of that particular Shabbat custom. I know it's been associated with other fires in New York, so presumably it's been causing problems as long as it's been around. Does rabbinic literature say anything about it? Are there any recorded traditions of just serving cold food?

My mother used to say that after JFK was inaugurated with no hat on, the American hat industry evaporated over night. Is there any truth to this? If there is- why? If not what lead to the decline in hat wearing among American men?

It occurred to me that I don't think I've ever read anything on the Crusades at the time they were happening. I understand that the crusades took place over a long period of time, but was the word used at all during that time?

How could they find voting records, basic bio, stances, goals, affiliations, funding, etc...?

I was thinking of the Thirteen Days movie with Kevin Costner about the Cuban Missile Crisis and there is a scene there if i recall correctly when Costner (president's chied of staff) visits the USSR embassy at the height of the crisis and the secretary is terrified, basically trembling because of the prospect of nuclear war. Would a country notify its own embassy staff before launching a nuclear strike again against a city that hosts the attacker's embassy? Or would the staff be considered expendable in order for the suprise to be total, maybe prevent leaks, whatever?

Recently found out about Bayard Rustin, but having a lot of trouble with conflicting sources about how large his actual role was, for example, some articles I found said he was behind everythin Martin Luther King did, and others kinda just put him on the sidelines, would love some clarification. Also if you could, could you tell me how he felt about being somewhat hidden because of his sexual orientation and other factors?

I can understand it in certain aspects but on an overall scale it is not very well explained in books that I have read.

What are your suggestions?

I understand most of the historical facts: Caesar waged an illegitimate war in Gaul so the Senate issued a proclamation ordering him to surrender his legions and return to Rome for prosecution. Caesar, not to disarm himself or take orders, instead crossed the rubicon with his 13th legion and started a civil war instead.

I'm more interested in an analysis of why the civil war began. Which the events leading up to the civil war, how they happened, and if actions of a specific person or institution are to blame. Civil wars are pretty disastrous events, and I think people generally strive to avoid them, so I think it's worth studying how they happened, what went wrong along the way, what could have prevented them, and how to prevent them in the future.
