Maybe there's been progress, but I understand the Etruscans to rank alongside the Minoans and the Sea Peoples in terms of ancient civilizations we know little about.
What characteristics of Roman religion and culture clearly derive from Etruscan origins?

Now lately ive been diving into the atom bomb from the Baker bomb to the Tsar Bomba and beyond. I have this question for awhile. I know the Baker bomb wasnt even a firecracker compared to modern day armaments. So what were all those ships doing so close? Id assume some of them were there for scientific purposes or maybe some mothballed ships to examine destruction properties. I mean tyou watch the video and its right there on top of them.

Hey all, I'm doing a History extension major which analyses different representations of Martin Luther King Jr. However, I am struggling to find any historians who held any bias towards King, or thoroughly disapproved of his character or legacy. Anything would help and would be much appreciated!

At the end of the Nagorno-Karabakh war, why was the region under Armenian control not formally annexed by Armenia (especially given Armenian forces retain control over the region until today)? I only have minimal understanding of the conflict but was under the impression that by the end of the war, the Armenian forces had gained an upper hand. If that is the case however, why was Armenia not in a position to dictate more favourable terms for itself?

I'm want to learn the abilities of Longbows, Yumis, Mongol Bows, Ottoman Bows, etc, how they were used in comparison with each other, and what environmental factors made them develop the way they did.

I presume this is not a global occurence, but on the 5/7 continents that I travelled, people were filing, cutting or clipping their nails. Yet I can't imagine early homo sapiens sitting at the fire with some sort of pumice stone doing a manicure. When did humans start shortening their nails with purpose? Did this habit develop simultaneoulsly, or spread from one location? Thank you.

I just realized that the landings at Inchon were basically the last amphibious landings that I can remember or have read about. What changed after Korea that made these landings unpopular? Was it simply the fact that no theater after Korea was suitable? Or was there a large change in tech and doctrine that discouraged naval invasions?

Or generally in the U.S. Millitary, I rather should say.

Dear historians. I study History in University of St Andrews (UK). I was wondering if any of you guys are studying/studied something else at your free time, just so to increase your employability? it seems getting a job out of univesity as history graduate is near impossible :( i am currently studying coding(python), but i honestly still suck at it, and find it difficult. I am not even sure if coding is the thing to study if you arent crazy about it. any ideas?

I've been reading a book lately, "The Illustrated History of Canada" and it has sparked a question. A passage I was just reading explained that Cartier took two sons of a chieftan back to Europe and returned them promptly the next year. Though it did not go into any further details. Are there any other accounts of natives being taken back, and what was the reaction from both sides? Thanks!

I imagine the History Channel has made the word "alien" a curse word around these parts and I realize this may be a broad question, maybe its not, I truly don't know. But it seems like recently we're attributing everything from as-yet-to be explained phenomena to even ancient discoveries as being the work of extraterrestrials. It is my understanding that religion used to have that role. I.E. rising sea levels are attributed to a flood by an angry God, or a comet is said to be the "Jesus star" or whatever. Some of my more nutter friends, and seemingly a great number of people these days, seem to think that UFOs and aliens were a part of the human dialogue from the beginning. They site the fact that there are documented unexplained sightings going hundreds of years back. But until we know absolutely everything about the science of the universe, there will always be unexplainable things. I'm wondering if there is a measurable and documented "rise of the aliens" so to speak.
We can look back and see where a lot of beliefs rose from and in some ways "why." So where and when the hell did this idea come from? Basically I'm asking for the short-form version of the history of aliens as a human construct. Any and all help is appreciated.

I'm dealing with Pfeilschifter's challenge to Brunt's estimates of the Italian population in the late Republic. I've never been good at math, but so far everything looks like guesswork to me. Populations at t and t1, are assumed; carrying capacity of the land are assumed; birth and death rates are assumed. So, how does this work?

After the treaty of Versailles, the German economy was thrown into shambles and there was instability throughout the country. So how were the Nazis able to create not only the army, but all the infrastructure needed with it? How were they financing all the research as well to have such top notch tech at the time and who was doing all the research?

You can see Roman influence from the Tsardom of Russia to the Holy Roman Empire, my question is why were so many people of that timeframe concentrated on the Empire that fell rather than the Roman Republic that fell? Was there any attempt to or display of fascination to run a country modeling the Roman Republic during the Renaissance?

As far as I know most of Roman culture and architecture is based on Greek culture and architecture. Why did Rome adopted so much of the Greeks, and why was it so fast?
