I'm talking about doomsday theories, claims of the end of the world, that sort of thing we see today that runs rampant, how often were these happening in the U.K. during the Victorian Period?

Precisely, at what point in history did they start seeing Eurasia as two different continents and why? Is there a cultural/political reason?

I have read Hart's Gallipoli, and while his style is not my favorite, I would like to know more about specific battles, such as Verdun and the Somme. I've read Keegan's one volume history, but I'm looking for things that go more in depth in regard to specific battles.

In the Islamic Golden age during the medieval times

I'm halfway through my first year as an undergraduate and I'm looking to cultivate some good habits for research, gathering interpreting sources (I really suck at this), taking notes, writing essays... tips and tricks that could really help for university and beyond. The more I get into my course, the more I find that I've got rocky foundations in the discipline. Any lengthy advice would be helpful.

Also I'm confused on why and how we study history:

• As a historian, am I supposed to glance at history through the window of modern sensibility and moral judgement, and act as a "judge" putting history on trial? Or,

• Should I be more empathetic to the past and, instead of having strong opinions as above, be imaginative and move as much as possible to a position of understanding "alongside" history and being objective?

Perhaps the above aren't mutually exclusive, but I feel that in all of my work so far that's the case. I started the course with the whole "I study history to prevent bad things happening in the future" thing going on, and almost exclusively studied political history, genocides, human rights abuses, so on. But now I've found many other facets of history, such as cultural studies, Alltagsgeschichte, history of fashion, music, that require a more empathetic approach to research, to really imagine the paradigms of the time period and almost be "in character" so to speak.

If some of this doesn't make sense or if I sound ignorant, please hold your judgement long enough to explain (calmly) why I might be wrong, constructive criticism and book recommendations are welcome. I'm not the best with words. Thanks!

As I understand, one of the factors leading to WWI was a complex and secretive system of alliances between several European nations. As the declarations of war mounted up, were there countries that had to choose which alliance to break and which one to take part in?

Around 9th and 10th century, would the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms know that they had come from Denmark, or thereabouts, or would they have believed they had always been living where they were? This could apply to the common farmer, or the kings and lords.

They were both extremely similar in premise; a battle of North vs South, Communist vs Democracy, both overseas not near the US. Korea veterans were not regarded very fondly, yet there's a lot more respect for those veterans from Vietnam. Why?
