I am doing a project on the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s. I am trying to locate online newspaper archives for the states in the Mid Atlantic region at that time. I do not know if that decade (1920-1930) is too far back, or if I am just not looking in the right places. Do you have any good (preferably low cost or free) resources that could be helpful? I have received a school assignment in which we are supposed to read a (any) biography and, as I've been highly interested in Wellington since reading Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe novels I figured I would ask... Could any of you here from r/Askhistorians point me to a good biography of Arthur Wellesley, up to about 600 pages in length(can't be too long, as there's a deadline). The book should be in English (or Portuguese, but I know that's trickier) and be preferably available in e-book format.

So I went to the British Museum and they had an exhibition of British propaganda prints and drawings from the Napoleonic era. I noticed that already by that point they were using speech bubbles to indicate who is speaking (although they didn't have a white background for the bubble, must be a more recent development). When and where did speech bubbles become common in denoting who is speaking and what?

If there is any accuracy to the notion that preplanned duels with pistols was a real thing in the old west, which I assume there is considering pistol and sword duels were a thing on the east coast and Europe at the time and prior. Did they really arrange to have the duel at noon? Was this so both parties could be sure to KNOW when the fight was without error? Is it possible that it was made to be noon because then the sun would be overhead and neither shooter would have a glare disadvantage?

For anyone who knows how to draw, it's not that difficult to draw a moderately realistic person, or animal, or object. So why is there no ancient artwork that looks accurate? Ancient greek, egyptian, japanese, chinese, african, and other artwork is all very stylized and cartoonish (poor word choice, but you know what I mean). As far as I know, it wasn't really until the European Renaissance that artwork that really looked realistic came about.

I am in the process of writing a research paper about how the KKK influenced California during 1920-1930s. In my research I came across a claim that Porter was current member/former member of the Klan, but nothing really concrete. I've searched my school's databases rigorously, but haven't found much more about him. Does anyone know if there is merit to these claims or was it mainly hearsay? When I visited the Middle East with my school, one of the lectures we heard was by an Arab historian who said the crusades were more racial than religious because Arabs fought with each other no matter what religion they were. Is this a fair assessment of that time?

I don't understand what Ruthenia is, its relationship with Ukrainian identity, its relationship with Rusyns. Are Rusyns the same as Ruthenians? Why don't they have their own country? Are they the same as Ukrainians?
