For example did every solider carry their food/gear/ammo to battle. Were there "baggage" trains to carry supplies. What about the horses and siege weapons.

Hi all - I submitted this question to /r/italianhistory as well, but I probably have a much better chance of getting an answer on this much busier subreddit.

I'm running a Call of Cthulhu RPG campaign - Tatters of the King, if you're interested - which has diverted the player characters, for the moment, from their homes in London to Milan.

My question is how feasible it would be, realistically, for them to bring their weapons into the country and carry them, concealed or otherwise. The year is 1929 and, if relevant, they're making the journey by rail.

I've come to the limits of my Google powers and come up somewhat short. The earliest relevant law I can find reference to is the Public Safety Act of 1931, which if I'm not mistaken seems to have been used mostly to quiet and disarm liberal dissidents. But if there was a law on the Italian books restricting firearms before then, I can't find it.

So... does anyone have any dirt for me on this very specific area? Will the Italian people make the grave mistake of allowing this group of Brits and Americans to bumble around the country with deadly weapons in tow? The guns in question include bolt-action hunting rifles, pump shotguns, and revolvers.

So this bugged me for a long time and I did some digging myself but I'm curious, what gave the rise to horse archery in the east but the lack of them in the west? By west I obviously mean Europe opposed to Asia and the Middle East.

I have heard of the following reasons

• They pray to Guan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) and the father Guan Yin was the "king of cows" and thus, it is a respect we show to deity Guan Yin

• Buddhists respect cows for their contribution towards mankind, as they supply milk to man, and do all the hard work in the field

• Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism was born a Hindu, and thus abstinence from beef is a Hindu tradition that naturally goes to China hand-in-hand with Buddhism

However, based on my knowledge, beef is widely eaten in countries like Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. Also, I would like to know if there's anything to do with the difference between Theravada and Mahayana branches. Which might explain beef's prevalence in the above mentioned countries.

Edit for confusion: I was wondering how the differences between the cultures of the Hellenistic Eastern Mediterranean and the iron age Western Europe affect the subsequent legacy/consequences of the Roman integration in those two areas. i.e. Wider ranging consequences in the West than the East?

Would he rant and curse like Nixon and kick in television screens whenever the latest countercultural outrage presented itself? Did he see himself as the guardian of all that was decent and virtuous? Or were his actions and statements motivated more by simple politics and cynicism, playing to the so-called 'silent majority' (which wasn't yet called that by then, I assume)?

By "counterculture" I have specifically in mind the whole HaightAshbury/SunsetStrip milieu. The ones who "live like Tarzan, look like Jane, and smell like Cheetah", to quote Mr. Reagan. Although I know he flipped out over the Oakland Black Panthers, and had it out for the Berkeley radicals.

Not to say its out of style now necessarily, but you never see a professional or anybody in political power with facial hair anymore and I am curious as to why that is.

I just finished watching the "Madness of King George" and I can't imagine it was actually used.

The show "Mankind: The Story of All of Us" gave me the impression that the vikings as a people had a very violent culture. In Episode 4, "Warriors" the show states that the vikings became the knights that then fought in the First (I assume first, because I don't remember the show specifying which crusade) Crusade.

How much of the violent viking culture was actually responsible for the Crusades and other acts of violence in Europe?
