I cannot for the life of me fathom how did the Visigoths came from so far to settle on what is today Spain, and become ancestors of the spanish people. How did that come to pass? I've read wikipedia but I'd like a more qualified opinion. Also, would be interested on a book on the subject. All the migrations from that period of time are of great interest to me. E-books are a plus since I live in Argentina and getting academic books in english is pretty much impossible unless they are on electronic format.

What about conversational ability in the dead languages? Did it exist at all? How often would someone who knew a dead language get the chance to speak it with someone?

If this question is too general, I guess I'd be especially interested in Hebrew. If that's not specific enough, maybe just the Middle Ages? I'd really love to know about the entire span from the beginning of the Diaspora to the 19th-century revival, or really anything about any language that's ever been characterized as dead, but answers to the limited version of the question would be great too.

I've always had trouble picturing, or understanding what certain types of battles look like. I've heard about Mongol battles but I understand they were different than the average.

I was building a Halloween costume of a 1980's-ish Soviet tank soldier when the thought occurred to me-- has war reenactment always been a 'thing'? I'm not talking about playing as a soldier (e.g. fighting with wooden swords in the backyard) or actual war fighting/war games. I'm talking about the kind of American civil war/WW/WWII reenactment groups that go to actual battlefields, have detailed costumes that match the period, etc. Thanks in advance!

I know that after the Ottomans and other muslim empires conquered Anatolia, the Greek populations of the area stayed there. I know about the greek genocide by the turks and the population exchanges, but Greece today only has a population of 10 million today and I feel that the Byzantine empire would have had a larger population.

I've heard that only a small percentage of the southern population actually owned slaves. That the average southerner disagreed with slavery, not because it was evil, but because it took away paying jobs from those that needed them. How true is this?

Yes, my title is correct. I work on a team of experts who work along the Battlefields of Europe, Great Britain, & South East Asia. My team is sending me as the primary guide to lead our Canadian Vets (at least, what's left of them) overseas for the 70th Anniversary since the Liberation of Holland. In my prep leading up to tour, I want to dive deep into some historical fiction (and some good non-fiction too!) that touches upon this historical event, - or - mainly, the Canadian involvement in the Second World War. I want to get a really clear idea of what these boys went through to end this great conflict in our history. I would love suggestions, and will trade suggestions for feedback from our boys while on tour.

I recently read Robin Lane Fox's The Classical World since I have a large interest in ancient Greek and Roman history. Unfortunately the book ends around late 2nd century when Rome was on the height of it's power. In my research as to what happened after, wondering what led to the downfall of the Roman Empire, I found references to the 3rd Century Crisis everywhere. I've read about the inflation, difficulties of governing such a big realm etc. but unfortunately I haven't been able to extract the essence in a way, that is comprehensible to me. So basically, I want to get the Big Picture. What happened back then?

I know rich people would have litters and slaves to carry them around. And poor people had to walk everywhere. But what if I were just mildly wealthy? Could I rent a litter for a day or a single ride, like a taxi? Or was there any other means of transportation I could hire? Was it possible to ride in the city on horseback?

Also what would be the best way for me to get to, say, Lugdunum (or any other city far away from the coast). My gues would be by ship to Massillia and then to Lugdunum in a rented chariot. If one could rent a chariot, that is.
