Saw it in many TV shows, that the wounded soldiers of the defeated army were finished off by stabbing them. Was it that bad? It seems reasonable, that the victorious army didn't want to share the rare medical resources with the opponent, but killing everybody unable to walk off seems a little bit harsh.

Things you would think I would have found definitive answers about, but have not:

How many slaves joined in at the peak of the raid?

How many people died?

What was the population of Harper's Ferry and Bolivar?

What was the weather like on October 16th, and in the weeks leading up to October 16th?

Is Osborne Anderson's account of the raid considered definitive or questionable?

Thank you so much for perusing these questions, I doubt I'll find answers for all of them but even a few crossed off the list helps me. The last question I asked here was answered very patiently and adroitly, and I sincerely appreciate it.

I've read a few right ups on this sub that compare the way the Civil War was fought with the Franco-Prussian War, and they are all negative about the tactics the Americans used. If the Europeans were so much better, why didn't the Americans import some experts, the US has always been a nation of immigrants, surely some of them were skilled in the military arts. Did US commanders know they were getting criticized during the war?

The common telling of this is that the Native Americans were mostly killed off by European diseases. If that really was the case, why was the reaction to new diseases so asymmetrical? Surely the Europeans were being exposed to new diseases as well.

What were the actions that led to the Prime Minster becoming the most powerful figure in the UK and the Monarchy becoming mainly ceremonial? Also how much power for example did Frederick North have compared to what David Cameron has now?

I'm a junior in High School, always had an interest in history and I really cant think of anything else I would rather do for a living then Archeology. Im currently looking at University of Chicago (If I get accepted) and the University of Wisconsin Whitewater (which I've been told has a very good anthropology program). I was at a talk tonight given by a survivor (Tomi Reichental) of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. As an aside given to a question asked about the starvation in the camps, the speaker mentioned that although he never directly saw it himself, he had heard from others in later years, that some of the prisoners had turned to cannibalism.

The possibility of cannibalism in the concentration camps has never occurred to me (although now it seems so obvious considering the level of prolonged starvation) and Tomi said himself that he only heard about it second-hand, so what historical evidence is there for cannibalism in any of the Nazi concentration camps?

In history classes, I always here about the 10% plan by Abe Lincoln and the 50% plan by Radical Republicans, but were there other plans by southern states? Were there other plans by northern politicians that aren't as widely known?

I am a History/SS major and for an advanced writing class we have been assigned a 4-6 page persuasive research paper. I do not have to do a topic related to history, but because I am a History student, I would like to write something that would benefit me in my future career path. The problem I have is that the topics that I think I can write a good persuasive paper over are too broad. I asked about writing over the cause of the civil war and that was vetoed by my teacher. These are some of the ideas I've thought about, let me know if any of them sound interesting, overdone. impossible to persuade, or too broad. More suggestions would be great as well!

-If Hitler died in WW1 we would have still had WW2 due to a large degree of Nationalism (someone else would have risen to power - It might not have been as bad as it was, but there still would be a war)

-Who was Jack the Ripper?

-Was Queen Victoria actually heir, or was she a bastard child from her mother's lover?

-Civil Disobedience - right or wrong?

-Atlantis fact or just a good story?

Right now I'm leaning toward Atlantis or Jack... I know there are a million and one papers I could write, but I'm just getting a mental block.

As far as i know, both South Africa and Rhodesia had apartheid systems with minority white rule. Was there any general difference between the two countries and their apartheid system and how they treated black people?

I can also try and put it in another way: let's say i was a black person, would i rather want to live in Rhodesia or South Africa during their apartheid era?

I know how they got Rome and the majority of the other parts of Italy, just not sure how they got Rome.

From what I heard, they got it through an alliance with Prussia, but I don't know how Prussia got Venice. I might be wrong on this though.

Were they basically propaganda machines for the Confederacy? Did they maintain objectivity? Were they critical of generals or the government?

I felt this fit best in r/askhistorians since this has to do with historical claims to territory:
Most countries in the Far East (China, Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, etc.) have some sort of claim to a number of different islands and bodies of water in the South China Sea. What types of documents or historical events are they claiming that can actually be verified as legitimate? It doesn't seem like there are any significant indigenous peoples to these areas, and I don't recall ever hearing about Asian countries extensively colonizing islands outside their immediate coastal waters.
