American armored unit structure and tactics during WW2

Hello. I am writing a short story that is somewhat related to an American Tank unit fighting in WW2. As I am a stickler for historical accuracy, I wanted to make sure that the way I describe the battles and command structure was accurate. Therefore, any information related to tank unit command structure and small scale tactics, particularly in desert terrain, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Was the importation of African slaves to the Caribbean based in racism or purely on economic need? (MIC)

disclaimer this is for an essay, so obviously I don't expect anyone to be writing a paper for me in the comments, but I'm having some difficulty finding good sources on the topic.

The topic of my essay is to debate whether Caribbean plantation owners were importing slaves from Africa due to the fact that they thought of Africans as inferior and therefore ok to enslave, or if they simply just wanted cheap labor and didn't care where it came from, but over time they used racism to justify it.

If any knowledgeable people have some specific examples I could use to help get me started, or have recommendations on good Books or Journal articles on the subject I would be forever in your debt, as so far I've had a lot trouble finding material that specifically talks about this.

Thank you all!

Why doesn't Winston Churchill seem to be judged as critically by history as other WWII leaders?

Obviously my question comes with it's own bias, and how judged he is is somewhat of a hard point to prove, but a short list of things Churchill can be considered at least partially responsible for:

  • The Gallipoli Campaign in WWI as First Lord of the Admiralty.

  • The Allied policy of bombing civilian targets in WWII.

  • The firebombing of Dresden specifically.

  • The exacerbation of and then indifference by British high command to the Bengal famine.

  • Pressuring to put Montgomery in charge of an invasion of the Netherlands and Germany (Operation Market Garden). Which was a huge failure.

Many of these decisions were military based and not necessarily political or diplomatic, but he used his position as Prime Minister to realize them. Why is he often "let off the hook" for the most part when his legacy is being discussed, with many historians and biographers either glossing over these incidents or ignoring them entirely? Overall, it seems like in part he was a former military man with a spotty record, who as a politician interfered with military operations or didn't interfere when it came to human rights, sometimes to disastrous effect.

What are good books on the Italian Wars of the 15th and 16th Century?

I am mainly looking at the political side of it and have looked at some books on Renaissance diplomacy. I've requested The Italian Wars 1494-1559 by Christine Shaw and have started looking at Sack of Rome by Luigi Guicciardini (well, the translated version) and The Black Bands of Giovanni: Infantry and Diplomacy During the Italian Wars by Maurizio Arfaiol.

During the Middle Ages in Europe, which events lead to Eric The Red and his son, Leif Erikson, to cross the Norweigan Sea and the Atlantic to discover new worlds?

I am taking a college course over pre-industrial America. It is early in the semester so we are covering pre-Columbus America right now. There is much more to the essay than what I ask in the title, but this in particular I am having the most trouble with.

I can find plenty of Information on how Eric The Red settled in Greenland and Iceland, then later his Son with Vinland (Newfoundland). But with all that happened during the transition between "low"-Middle Ages and "High"-Middle Ages, I can't seem to find in my research a distinct series of events that led to Eric and his Sons voyages into the new worlds.

Looking for information regarding the discovery, and continuous 'rediscovery' of the Americas

Taking an optional class on historiography, and we were asked to debunk a common myth about United States and or North American history. I chose the myth that Columbus discovered America, and while I know that travel to the Americas basically came from all sides of the globe. With evidence from Phillipines/Japan/Siberia venturing to Hawaii/South America/Alaska respectively, and some evidence that peoples from Africa ventured into South America/Haiti, and of course the Viking expeditions into Newfoundland. I'm just looking for possible sources for my work, a few possible books, articles(peer reviewed preferred), and other primary sources if possible. I've read from some Sagas mentioning the travel to Newfoundland, referred to as Vinland. But not much else, looking for help! While I believe I know exactly where I want to go with this, I would of course take any information any of the Historians here would like to offer.

The usual roman legionnaire is depicted with gladius and pila and wearing mail armour; did they always use that equipment or would it change based on their current campaign and their expected enemies?

I especially mean the time period between the 1st century BC and the 2nd AD.

For example, in a campaign in the middle east, where cavalry seems to be more important, would we see legionnairs using spears instead of gladii?
Or, would their armour change to something lighter than mail while deployed in the hot north africa or would they deal with the heat in another way?

So i guess i could ask, besides ligher or warmer clothes would the equipment of a legionnaire vary significantly based on where he's stationed across the empire?

Has the majority of the British/English population mostly been replaced/mixed or adopted other cultures throughout history.

There has been many foreign invasions onto the British isles throughout history (Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Normand). Did this in practice mean that the populations that lived there before the Romans were largely replaced by the different waves of invasions and migrations? Did the groups mix to such a degree that most modern Englishmen has an equal amount of Brytons, Angles, Saxons and Normans in their ancestry? Or has the bulk of the population largely remained the same with a minority of ethnic groups mostly changing the culture of original inhabitants?

Additionally, how does ancestry differ across class? I suppose most nobility/upper class people have mostly Norman ancestry, but does the middle class have mostly Anglo-Saxon ancestry with rural or lower class people having mostly Brytonic ancestry? Is the majority of non-upper class population mostly mixed?

Thanks in advance.

Given the recent uptick in Jihad versus Crusade comparisons, i've seen this image a lot, what does it ACTUALLY show?

Also, I see many arguments against the comparison that President Obama made. Is there a fair comparison to be made? Anyone care to do a general assessment on the "comparability" of the two?

http://i.imgur.com/bpnbqRI.jpg -- this is the image that is going on (mainly on right wing blogs) to counter the points being made. This image seems to have come from this youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_To-cV94Bo&feature=youtu.be preliminary research shows that this guy is a physicist I think. So not sure his relevancy on historical topics or whether or not he actually made this image himself or got it from a different source.

Thanks for the help!
