I have always wondered this because in the US we are taught majorly about slavery and the civil war but continue education I saw that there are a lot of underlying principles besides slavery. I just find it hard to believe that the people would go crazy just because of one verdict.

Is there an accurate estimate for the literacy rate of Roman citizens circa 100 CE? I've heard 10% and read up to 30%.

Northern Italy is richer than Southern Italy in modern times. I visited Southern Italy recently and I was told the Kingdom of Two Sicilies ruled by the Spanish Bourbon dynasty was and advanced and prosperous state.

I know that Southern Italy was not politically advanced in terms of democracy; like some of the other republics in the north. I was told that Southern Italy had advanced banking, railroads and was wealthier than many regions in the north of the Italian peninsula.

I heard that the rise of the mafia was not simply a criminal organization but an anti-state movement. It was a reactionary movement against the unification of the country which was a project based in Piedmont by the Savoy dynasty. Is this accurate?

This narrative was completely different from what I was told when I was young. The historical picture I had of pre-unification Italy was that of Florence, ruled by Medici family and the wealth of the Renaissance period(I assumed this was the case in neighboring northern Italian regions). I was under the impression that the north was always richer and more advanced.

Apparently this is a big debate in Italy. I'm not really sure what is historically accurate about the wealth of northern/southern Italy pre-unification. Can anyone enlighten me on the subject?

And if there is could you offer me some reading material on the matter?

I've read about it a little on Wikipedia, but I'd really like to know more specifics. I understand that the fact that Albanian representatives weren't included in the 1920 Paris Peace conference had something to do with it?

Was there any way Italy could have maintained the protectorate by acting differently?

All I really know about US immigration is the Chinese Exclusion Act (1887/9?) and the Quota acts of the early twentieth century, and even then I've only studied them in passing. A refresher on some constitutional law is welcome as the argument I've heard the most is simply "it's unconstitutional". So what are the precedents? What would be some good Supreme Court decisions on immigration to look at? Any good monographs?

One more question. What is the cultural/political background of blocking immigration from... Let's say Latin America for so long? Hasn't this mindset been around since at least the Quota policies? And certainly with some speculation, how has this anti immigration attitude persisted so long past the life of the exclusion and quota acts?

Since the missing person who committed a crime is likely going to keep up with his story, have news stations/media ever given false information to the public in hopes of fooling the perpetrator to somehow make a mistake or turn himself in? Any famous example of this?

I've recently been reading about the horrible conditions of western front combat during WWI. I'm having a hard time understanding how someone who experienced first-hand the traumatic fighting of a global conflict could be so willing to take the risk of instigating another terrible world war.

Do we have any evidence that Hitler's experience in Flanders and other battles made him hesitant to send German soldiers to war?

Did Hitler take any military steps to specifically avoid trench warfare in WW2, possibly due to his experiences in WWI?
