What was it's importance to Rome? Who were it's people? What did they think of in terms of their relation to the Empire? It's not a subject I've seen talked about and I'm curious about really any insight into this territory during any period of Roman/East Roman occupation.

The more I think about it the less sense it makes: Though for a few hundred years in between the official residence of the Russian government was in saint Petersburg the Kremlin must have still kept it's symbol as a major seat of the imperial Russian government. During the reign of Nicholas II it must have been a hated symbol for many Muscovites. Not only was it a seat of power it also comprised five palaces which would represent the aristocracy that the communists were against and four cathedrals which represent the church which the communists were also against! Excuse me if my limited English is hampering the flow of the question but I am really wondering how the communist government found this a suitable seat of power instead of one of the massive constructivist buildings.

I've been doing a bit of googling and haven't found an answer, although according to the timeline it was likely in Paris I was hoping there is a record of where the ceremony had taken place.

While exploring my family history I was able to trace back to an ancestor who came over with William the Conqueror and worked as his constable. I thought some cosplay might be a fun way to get in touch with this part of my heritage. What might he have worn? Would he have been armed? Are there any good resources for historically accurate costume from this time period?

I am Norwegian, and have a great interest in WWII, especially WWII in Norway. In some literature, (most notably the norwegian movie "Max Manus") the explanation given for the lack of troop movement back to germany, is basically that the norwegian resistance detroyed infrastructure to halt german movements in Norway.

However, it seems to me that the germans would have greatly benefitted by using more than half a million fresh battle-ready soldiers during the final months of the war. Why did they not retreat from Norway, and move troops to the defence lines?

I know it probably varied greatly between the years but I always imagined it as daily or nightly fights over Europe. However I realize that that pace might be unrealistic especially in the earlier stages before the US and UK built up their superior forces. I'mmainly curious about the allies but would appreciate insight into the axis side as well. Thanks in advance for any answers, this sub has already exposed me to many in depth concepts that I doubt I would have ever learned about otherwise.

I have read lots of theories behind this, many conspiracies etc. Could some expert in modern American history, specifically African American history shed any light on this issue? Was it something directed by the government to keep the black civil rights movement down? Something else? Several reasons? Perhaps a simpler reason than one might think? Appreciate any kind of concrete insight into this tragic issue.

It seems like for the past 60-70 or so years, physical fitness has been synonymous with the military, the phrase "boot camp" conjures up thoughts of running/push-ups, etc.

when did the US military make physical exercise a regular part of the "curriculum" (for lack of a better term)?. IIRC, "gymnastics" was part of what was taught at West Point for a very long time, but I didnt know if that meant running/conditioning/etc.

I often see battles number hundreds of thousands when we talk about ancient battles both in the west and east, but while in the west modern historians seem to consider ancient historians as unreliable claiming such numbers would be impossible to maintain with ancient era logistics and so on, the same doesn't see to happen for chinese ancient battles, I once read about 600.000 while sometimes being outnumbered 10 to 1 men battles or 200.000 soldiers buried alive in ancient chinese sources and somehow this seems unlikely to me, so how reliable are they?
