I have to do a book report on a book of my choosing for any time or person during the French Revolution. All of the books I have are generally overviews of the time and don't delve into a certain topic.
Obviously this is a huge topic and I have no clue where to start. If you guys have any favorite bios or books for this time period, I'd love some suggestions.

It seems that they started out as fairly inexperienced divisions. However gained experience quickly early in the war. The real question is that on top of replacing losses to existing divisions, they raised A LOT of divisions post '42 which would seem to defy the elite status of the best men with the best training/equipment.

Hi! I was planning on possibly sampling this song in one of my musical productions. I've done a bit of research and it seems that this is a folk song, with lyrics talking about two Cossacks and a girl. However, I'm not very aware of the position and history of Cossacks as a people and thus would like to ask you:
If I sample the aforelinked song can it contain any uncomfortable subtexts related to the history of Cossacks or something else? (As in I wouldn't necessarily want to sample a racist/otherwise derogatory folk song so I just want to be in the clear here even though I suspect the lyrics of that song are relatively innocuous..)

I am working on a topic on Napoleon and the Jews - that should include this information. Of course there are wonderful date converters so it is possible to know the Hebrew dates. But if I want to know what was the weekly portion I can only find that in our present year the week of 11 Heshvan meant reading the Portion Lech Leacha (on Abraham going out of Ur). But it is not sure for each year.

My knowledge of Africa before colonialism is extremely limited (outside of Ancient Egypt), and I'd like to fix that.

Years ago, in a high school history class, we watched a movie about the Civil War (I think it was Gettysburg, or maybe the Blue and the Grey), and in a depiction of the battle of Bull Run, there were many wealthy aristocrats who arrived to the battlefield with picnic baskets to watch the fighting. Did this really happen? How common was it? And more importantly, why? Were these people oblivious to what combat and war was like? How did they become that out of touch? What was the culture like in the 1860s that would make something like that seem like an attractive idea?

It seems that would have been a fairly easy way to assist their German allies. The Soviet Navy was not a terribly strong one, whereas the Imperial Japanese could have had the strongest navy in the world in 1941. It wouldn't have taken much of the IJN to seal off that port, and I don't think the Soviet navy had anywhere near the strength to break the blockade.
With Vladivostok blockaded, the USSR would be cut off from a major landing point for lend-lease supplies, which I imagine would have hurt them significantly.
So why not? Was the IJN just too thinly spread to try, or did they simply have no interest at all in helping the Germans?

As you can see in this map, Switzerland has no common language and no common ethnicity, which are often necessary to hold a country together. How has Switzerland managed to remain united and not broken up and absorbed into Germany, France, or Italy?
