Did the Union Jack ever have a red background with a blue central cross?

This illustration is often used to represent events on evacuation day in Massachusetts. The flag fluttering to the ground is the flag the British Army left there but the colors look the opposite of how the Union Jack typically looks. Was there ever a flag like this that the British flew?

Did Caesar actually use dogs to lick the wounds of his injured soldiers?

I recently read that Caesar used dogs to lick the wounds of his injured soldiers. In trying to conduct my own hasty web research... I am rather unclear if it is a myth or actually can be substantiated. In my research, I ran across an excellent overview of battlefield medical expertise outlined by Celsus... But it did not mention the use of any such dogs. So I decided to join the cite and see if Celebreth might elaborate more. Thanks!

Why was Warren Harding considered one of the worst US Presidents?

I've heard that he was ineffective and embroiled in the Teapot Dome scandal, but is there further insight. Also does anyone have a description of the scandal, facts leading up to it, and fall out (I know he died before being charged with anything)?

Thanks!

Was stress-induced fainting as big a deal in 19th century England as many novels would have us believe?

It seems in so many novels like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein and even less scary novels like Jane Austen stuff that people--mostly women--are always fainting when things get too exciting. Is this just a common plot device or is there some truth to chronic fainting?

Further, if it's false, why did they include it in so many books? If it's true what were the factors? Thanks.

Do we know of any ancient Greek jokes? (or other cultures)

I was just on the front page, reading a joke about a couple at the pearly gates and I started to wonder if any humor translates over from the ancient world. I'm aware of Aristophanes The Clouds, but that's it.

More to the point, were there 'pearly gate' type jokes about the afterlife?

When did distinct ethnicities form?

I wasn't sure whether this belongs in here or AskAnthropology but I figured I'd try here first! I recognize race is pretty much a gigantic grey area and not an exact science at all, however in general, we can often see a trend of similar physical characteristics of people from the same area. Do we know when these distinct ethnic groups formed? Or when we started differentiating between them?

Can anyone shed some light on Medieval or pre-Medieval special operations?

I'm quite interested in early warfare and I was wondering if there were any examples of small special operations teams (think seal team 6) during this time period and what duties they might be given.

Who did the US Air Force fighter pilots fight during the Vietnam war, and how did they fare throughout the war?

I don't know much other than we were fighting Russians manning migs in dogfights and we didn't do very well because of the phantoms (lack of) armament. How correct is this?

How significant was the loss of HMS Hood to the Royal Navy?

Was the loss so publicised due to Hoods status as the pride of the fleet? Or did it have a large impact on the Royal Navy's operational capabilities?

I'm aware of her, and Prince Of Wales' failure to destroy Bismarck, but would Hood have had a large impact on future engagements?

What is the oldest 'realistic' depiction in art of someone?

As in if a depiction if someone was placed next to them, I would recognise them. Or a highly intricate depiction of someone in art, as opposed to say a stick figure of someone.

Is there anything in the bible/Koran/Torah etc backed up by other historical sources?

Whether its the existence of a person that was famous and had a lot of followers who claimed to be holy or any actual miracles.

I always hear that the existence of Jesus can't be doubted, only whether he was truly the son of god but I've never seen any evidence outside of the bible.

I guess any evidence of Moses parting the seas or Noahs flood would be pretty unlikely but really anything at all from any religion.

Was King Richard 'The Lion Heart' homosexual?

According to this source

(notaparticularlygreatdancer.wordpress.com/2011/05/04/gay-monarchs-of-the-united-kingdom/)

King Richard I 'confessed to his church “the sin of sodomy” in just his underwear, and took 5 years to sleep with his wife, and only did so as a penance for his homosexuality' and that he slept in the same bed as the king of France.

Are there any credible sources that would show the king's true sexuality?

What is the significance of the phrase "gathering rocks in May" to the United States in 1943?

I have a job typing up letters a family friend has saved from several generations back. My current project is Jimmy, her great uncle who died in combat near Anzio on May 23, 1944. In a letter home from Fort McClellan, Alabama on May 6, 1943, Jimmy is telling his parents that the boys were doing work gathering rocks to line drainage ditches. In the middle of him saying this, he puts in parentheses and quotes the phrase "gathering rocks in May," like it's an inside joke or a pop culture reference. Can anyone help me with this? I cannot find anything about it anywhere on the Internet. It could just be an inside joke, but I would like to know if there are any other possibilities. I understand this is a very specific question.
