Why were children historically sewn into their clothes over the winter?

It used to be a custom in Europe to sew children into their clothes at the beginning of winter, only for the clothes to be removed in Spring.

  1. Why?
  2. How long did this go on for?
  3. Were there hygiene issues? How were they able to go to the toilet?
  4. Surely in winter, there would have been fluctuations in temperature, or a child would be warmer or cooler depending on whether the child was doing any exercise. Was there some kind of allowance for removing or adding one or two layers of clothing?

I just found a picture of a 'Nazi Constipation Camp' float from my University's graduation parade in 1934. How aware were people of the Nazi's actions at the time?

http://imgur.com/LIWe0gc

I wanted to know more about the context of the joke. Was it just a play on word, or a political commentary. How much would students in New Zealand in 1934 have known about the nazi'd actions against their own people?

What were the religious motives for the Puritans to emigrate to the US?

Question inspired by this episode of the BBC quiz QI - it goes against what I believe to be a tenet of the US high school history curriculum, that the Puritans fled to the US to avoid religious persecution.

When did the trend of giving race horses unconventional names begin and why has it become so popular?

Horse racing is known for having unusual names given to the horses over the years. Examples from this years Kentucky Derby include "Vicar's in Trouble" and "Intense Holiday." My question is why are horses named like this and when did it become popular to do so? I know very little of horse racing so forgive me if there's an obvious answer I'm not seeing.

How did the South Vietnamese collapse so quickly after the withdrawal of US support?

From what I understand, they collapsed due to economic reasons. According to Wikipedia, the US withdrew around millions of dollars in support, but did that mean that the South Viet gov was ENTIRELY dependent on the aid of another country?

Note: I also read that a spike in oil prices further hastened their decline.

Do modern representations of early U.S politicians accurately portray their voices/accents?

I got to realizing today that all (from my memory) representations of men such as George Washington, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, etc depict them with very concise, neutral, and near grammatically perfect prose. This got me thinking it's sort of a cultural thing, as we intentionally paint such popular men in the greatest light. Other than the superior education undoubtedly given to such important early figures, is there any evidence pointing to U.S founding fathers having vastly different or possibly unflattering voices?

I've read that the Stasi's records consisted of anywhere from 20-30 billion sheets of paper. Their records on some individuals must have been incredibly detailed. Are there any examples of an extremely detailed record of someone?

If Arab and Middle Eastern countries did not recognize or support the state of Isreal, why did they allow much of their Jewish populations to emirgrate there from the late 40's to early 70's?

I'm not asking about the "push" or "pull" factors concerning why Jews would emigrate, but it seems that allowing more Jewish people to emigrate to Isreal would strengthen the young country and that other countries in the Middle East would have wanted to keep Isreal as weak as possible.

Specificly, I am looking for detailed information on everything that was going on in every corner of Britain, France, Spain, and Italy during the years from CE 410 to 527. Has anyone here ever found a book, or visited a site, that seemed to have an unusually rich coverage of this period?

In the west we kind of overlook his flaws and just see him as a really cool warlord that conquered nearly 1/3 of the world a thousand years ago. but what about the Chinese? is he such a distant memory that view him with the same sort of "that guy was kind of neat" attitude that we do or do they despise/revere him in some way?
