Has there ever been a reference to the aurora borealis in Ancient or Medieval European texts?

Generally speaking, of course, about those civilizations that would have seen it regularly. Viking, Ancient Roman via the British Isles, or maybe turn-of-the-millennia Russia, anything at all? What was the nature of the text?

I've read that when liberating Nazi camps, American soldiers were so furious that they sometimes killed the guards who had surrendered. Did the British or Soviets have the same reaction?

Best sources regarding Clovis I and Pre-Carolinian France/Europe?

Hey guys! Junior level History major here and in the fall I'll be taking a Historical Research and Writing Class, and I'm thinking about trying to compose a narrative about Clovis I, so what are some sources I should be looking into? I've already taken a class and read a book contextualizing the Middle Ages, so I'm really only going to be interested specific things about Pre-Carolinian Europe or the state of France at the time the Roman Empire crumbled in that area, if you guys think that is even relevant.

(Also if you published Historians have any advice for an inspiring one, that would be great...)

Thanks!

I'm doing a project for my International Law course on the Israeli Occupation and the position I'm arguing for is that of it being illegal. I'm looking for solid websites/books/articles/etc. concerning this topic and how it relates to international law. I thought you guys might have a couple of ideas or maybe even just a good direction to point me in. Thanks a bunch!

Can anyone help me identify these binoculars (taken from dead German soldier in WW2).

Grandfather found some binoculars on the dead body of a WWII German soldier. Grandmother finds them too heavy for bird watching and isn't too concerned with what happens to them at this point.

If I wanted a good, annotated English translation of Ibn Fadlan's observations of the Rus, where should I look?

Specifically, one whose notes contain commentary on specific choices the translator made and other potential possibilities, keeping in mind the linguistic and cultural context that Ibn Fadlan was coming out of and how those might have informed the Arab traveler's perspective

Why didn't the Germans use large artillery in the Battle of Britain?

Perhaps this is not the best place to ask this question, but I don't know where else would be better.

I have heard about the air raids, the V2 Rocket Program (perhaps those didn't happen during the Battle of Britain).

I have heard about the combination of radar and cracking Enigma that lead to allowing the RAF to more competently hold the Germans off. But it has made me wonder for a long time why the Germans just didn't use large artillery to pound the UK?

Was it simply a matter of not having factories in place that could make them? Were they simply not practical? Too costly? Not "cool" enough? Was the math of the time not advanced enough to even allow for semi accurate shots over such a distance(not to mention the only way you can know what you hit is by listening into British news radio)?

When did the convention of using the term "Europe" begin?

We know that there is no separate continental/tectonic plate for Europe and in fact, the plate divisions run east/west (there's a Northern Eurasia and a Southern Eurasia, but there's no continental plate under Europe). The convention of calling a particular place Europe began long before that was known, of course. When did it begin?

I know there are still some arguments about precisely where the eastern boundaries of continental Europe may be, but where ever they are, they are drawn by convention and use of varied geographical features.

When is the earliest use of the term "Europe" by historians and were the boundaries clear at the time of its first use? Do historians generally agree today on where it is?

Why Britain didn't compete with United States and Russia in the space race in the sixties ?

Wikipideia says Britain didn't send any manned mission to the outer space as a response to Gagarin being first human reaching the space . I find this surprising from a country that was world leader only 20 years back and won WWII ? In general the interest of Britain to the space question is very little , in contrast to its great achievements in the industrial revolution and geographic exploration for example . Any readings that can analyze this question ?

I did try a search but was not able to locate anything quickly (I'm at work so I have to be fast). Thank you!
