I know launching a squadron of planes from a WW2 era aircraft carrier took about 45 minutes to an hour. What exactly did say the first or second plane do while the rest of the formation were launched? Wouldn’t the first plane have less fuel compared to the last plane? What did they do to mitigate this?

I was reading on the city of Segesta in Sicily, and how it was reported by the Greeks and Romans that Trojans had settled it - leading to a "kindred spirit" between the Elymians and the Romans, who both believed to have been descended from the Trojans. (This is from the Wikipedia article, so apologies if it is not correct). It also occured to me that Carthage has a Trojan origin story.
Is there any truth to this story? If not, why did so many different peoples and cultures base their origin on the same story?

Imperial Russia's former territories were held by Finland, Baltic States, Poland, Romania, Japan plus the territories that went free for a short time period during civil war and all of them got invaded or were obliged to hand over their territories except Turkey who still held Kars oblast traded back and forth till the Treaty of Brest Litovsk and subsequent treaties gave it back to Turkey. So how motivated were the Soviets to "take back" Kars?

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:
Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

As I said, why has society emphasised large families and population growth historically if resources and what one could use and obtain have been limited until relatively recently

I've come across conflicting information about the histories related to Black and African enslaved women serving as wet nurses for their enslavers' families or white women in their community. Are there particular works or historians that get into this history? Thanks so much!

I am writing an essay, and I claimed that people have said that poor people are poor because of their own moral failings. I have heard this in school when I was younger, but I have been unable to find a reliable source or any source at all really. Is this statement just flat out wrong then? The strange thing is that I have found articles talking about how the idea that poverty is a moral failing is a lie, but no source as to where said idea comes from. I just really need a good source but I just can't find a good article that speaks of the idea's origin.

In England, for example, I can't imagine 20,000 Chelsea fans walking through the British Museum and leaving everything intact! Or Millwall fans for that matter...
Siting a modern soccer stadium in the historical city, full of fragile museums, churches and palaces seems counter-intuitive considering you'll get a flood of 10,000 - 20,000 unpredictable soccer fans tearing through the streets.
So have the Venetian authorities ever discussed any options in the past such as relocating the stadium to the Mainland?
Or have Italians soccer fans, especially those who have travelled to Venice every Sunday, always been exceptionally well-behaved or something?
Or have there been some sort of historical restrictions placed on the number of away fans accessing the island? Or maybe fans have to vacate the island after a certain time?
Have there ever been any flare-ups of hooliganism or rowdy fans chucking things into the water or smashing things up, maybe even damaging churches and museums?
Sorry many questions there as I just don't get the practicality of the decision!

One of the aspects of the Tienanmen Square crackdowns I've never really understood is the role of the 27th Army Group seemingly massacring police, other Army groups, running over army medics and police lines in APCs and shooting soldiers and executing wounded soldiers.
From what I've read, they basically had to be cornered on a bridge by other army groups and put down.
What I've never seen explained is why, why did this Army Group spend so much time attacking police and other military, Government emergency services personal? Why was it left up to other Army Groups to stop them? Were they rogue?

I know James struggled to get this done with parliament, and I imagine the Civil War years certainly didn't help, but what happened in the interim years that made the process take over 100 years?

US and British Empire loaned many ships for Soviet use during WW2, but it seems most weren't given back till 1949, why was this? Did the Soviets just decide to try and keep it? If so, why give it back 4 years later? And did they learn anything valuable while operating such vessels considering Red Navy was the weakest of the arms.

Usually "dynasty" refers to a family of rulers or influential people, like the Hapsburg dynasty. In Chinese history though "dynasty" seems to be a different term, as different eras where China is ruled by different families are given names called "dynasties" but not named after the ruling family. Why is this?

There is a hypothesis called the Khazarian hypothesis that posits that most European Jews today trace back not to Judea and Samaria but rather to Khazars who converted to Judaism. How seriously is this hypothesis taken?

Hi, the French-Mexican war went from December 8th 1861 - June 21st 1867. 10 days after the war, the country Canada was founded. July 1st, 1867.
The providence Quebec still speaks French to this day.
Well anyways, I’m pretty sure the French-Mexican war ending had to do something with the creation of Canada.
Anyone have information on how Canada was formed? Did France own land in present day Canada during the French-Mexican war?

Many cosmologies and creation myths from different cultures all over the world explain how each of their respective peoples came into being from their own gods or supernatural forces, and were thus native to each region.
Why do no stories seem to recall a great migration out of an African motherland to wherever each of our ancestors ended up?
Or any other major migration for that matter?

A recent interaction elsewhere got me thinking about what conspiracy theories there were in the past. I'm also curious if they have had any significant impact or were just downright strange. I've heard of countries creating or spreading misinformation campaigns, but I've honestly not looked into it enough to know of any historical examples.
