Why was it that the South African Apartheid government was comfortable with allowing Steve Biko to die, yet ensured that figures like Mandela survived?

I am aware of a feeling that if Mandela suffered at the hands of the government that there would be a reaction akin to Soweto or Sharpeville. However, the Black Consciousness movement was arguably more prominent in South Africa than the ANC was (during its exile to the camps out of RSA) and yet Biko's passing is not attributed (in todays ANC narrative) to any major uprising (as far as I am aware). I assume this is because of the political/social climate of the time. I am hoping that someone can fill me on the more relevant details.

Were minted coins of metal able to suffer from inflation, or exchange rates?

A sort of broad question, but I'm generally referring to the time before paper money. Coins were minted, from copper, silver, and gold. Could two coins, minted in difference places, but largely the same (weight, made of gold, etc) be valued differently against each other? Did any type of coin ever suffer from inflation? For example, the florin was ubiquitous for sometime--were other similar gold coins not seen as valuable compared to it, even if they were largely similar?

What was the relationship between organized religion and the government in Germany during the Nazi era?

Did a quick search and was gobsmacked to find this question hadn't already been asked. How did the government of Nazi Germany deal with organized religion? I've seen Christians and atheists throughout the Internet using quotes from Hitler to argue that he was an atheist, a devout Christian, or neither of those things. Where does the truth lie? Was the Nazi government hostile to religion? What about atheism?

What was the stark contrast between Monophysitism/Jacobite Christianity and Byzantine Orthodoxy? Did people really got persecuted in Late Antiquity because they believed in different nature of the Christ?

We know that when Roman religion was still the dominant religion, Christians got persecuted because they refuse to observe the pagan Roman ritual.

But what did the Monophysite/Jacobite Christians did when they got persecuted by the official Byzantine Orthodoxy? Did they also refuse to observe some sort of Byzantine ritual in similar way the Early Christians did in pagan times? What was the stark contrast between the two, in terms of ritual and in terms of belief system?

How did Taiwan handle the massive influx of Chinese refugees following the Chinese Civil War? How did the Kuomintang "set up shop", so to speak?

I know that there has been significant Chinese presence on the island since the Qing Dynasty, but were there enough houses, farms, jobs, etc. to meet the needs of all the new migrants? Or did the Kuomintang have to build new ones really, really quickly?

Did any country in the Americas ever consider joining the USA?

Other than Texas.

I was reading some blog a while back that collected speculations about the future made in the past and it seems like a lot of early 1900's speculators seemed to think that various countries in North America would seek to join the United States over the course of the proceeding decades.

But that obviously didn't happen. Was it ever actually even seriously considered in public discourse in any independent American country?

Study supplement question - Does anyone know of a good online interactive map resource for world history?

I am hoping this will be an appropriate sub to ask this question.

Currently reading The Penguin History of the World by J.M. Roberts (self interest, not academic). I am enjoying it emmensely but I have a hard time keeping the information in my head. Ideally, I want to have a decent grasp on the summary of world history. I am a visual and kinetic learner so I would like to supplement the book with maps that I can play with.

I have found an interesting site for maps - http://www.timemaps.com/ but I thought I would ask the experts. Does anyone know of other history sites that are interactive and feature maps?

Were there whistle-blowers or organizations that exposed NAZI corruption and crimes to the general public in Germany?

How did the general public react to information being provided by whistle-blowers in Germany?

Did the general public dispute the credibility of these whistle-blowers?

What were some of the methods used by the NAZI party to counteract whistle-blowers in the media?

Are there any books or papers I can read about the ways whistle-blowers were treated in Germany and in the West?

Do we have any traces or comments of early Middle Age popular music?

I just read a book (by Olivier Cullin) about music in the middle ages and it mostly talks about liturgical music, and then describes how (if I understood correctly) with the rise of musical notation and polyphony came the rise of court/social/noble music and also how some more popular songs and pieces were noted musically.

Now, I understand that we don't have any musical traces of early popular music, but did any contemporary ever comment on it? I've heard that there are some descriptions of Roman music that made it through the ages so that while we have no idea how it sounded musically, we have an idea of instruments played and how organised it was.

The book I read heavily emphasised on the christian/philosophical view of pre-13th century music but never how these religious chants translated into popular culture (it didn't even say if it ever did, or not). I searched the internets for answers but unfortunately my google-fu was not enough.

So the question I ask is, do we have anything on pre-neumes/pre-notation music other than religious and court music?

Thank you, and sorry if I am not clear as English is my second language.

Why did the Soviet people fight so hard to defend a repressive regime in WWII?

I don't think it can be denied that the Soviet sphere was not a fun place to be during the 30's and 40's - to put it mildy. Why did they fight so hard? Was the propaganda department working in full overtime to convince the people that fascism was far far worse? Was it a genuine sense of pride for the nation despite the problems? Any other factors?

Thank you all in advance.

Did the Ancient Hebrews (ca. 700 BCE to 100 CE) believe in a literal interpretation of Genesis and the rest of the Tanakh?

I have heard many liberal Christian scholars claim that biblical fundamentalism is a relatively new phenomenon, but this confuses me. I do not understand why the ancient Hebrews would have regarded the Scriptures as metaphorical as opposed to actual historic truth. Were there other peoples at the time who had figurative interpretations of their own religious texts?

Book to Accompany Flags of Our Fathers Film

I need to find a book that accompanies Clint Eastwood's Flags of our fathers. It has to be an historical narrative that tells the events of Iwo Jima. I would prefer if it was from an American view point. If any historians here have read any texts about this event and would be willing to add some insight it would be greatly appreciated.
