Also, what did they do after the States entered the Great War? Were Americans treated as traitors if they fought for Germany before the U.S. entered conflict?

I was just lying in bed, trying to sleep and as you do, you think about things.
I just thought about the Carthage and Rome conflict and it was really annoying me that I couldn't remember a solid answer as to how it triggered. - I remember Sicily playing a role in it, when Rome sacked a Carthaginian settlement there?
I imagine it was to do with Mediterranean trade and Expansion?
Any replies would be great, Thank you.
Thanks for all the replies! :)

As some or many of you may know. Since the debut of COSMOS Sunday the segment about Giordano Bruno has caused a stir. I've seen people who have said it was correct and I've seen where some say it was a bunch of lies.
I'm sure many of you are saying "look it up for yourself." I have, but I'd rather go to a teach or someone with actual knowledge that dredge through website after website that may or may not have the correct answers.

Shakespeare was in acting troupes, and was known as an actor, yet I've never actually heard of him performing in the plays he wrote. Are there any documents or information to suggest this?

What impact did the FLQ attacks and the Canadian Federal government's suspension of civil liberties during the October Crisis have on the PQ? Did they affect the PQ support including their victory in the 1976 elections in a significant way?
Thank you

In many parts on England, some people say that King Arthur is not dead, but went by the will of our Lord Jesus Christ into another place. And people say that he shall come again and win the holy cross. They say that this verse is written on his tombstone: HERE LIES ARTHUR, ONCE KING, AND KING TO BE.

I recently read on wikipedia that Benjamin Franklin once owned slaves. I never considered that slaves would work in shops and in cities before. Were there a significant population of slaves working in cities at that time? What kind of jobs did they do? Did they ever work in factories at one time?

I feel that I was a bit misinformed when I took a course of labor and economic history of the US, but from what I recall I was taught that many politicians who were already in government felt threatened that union figures who ran for third parties(like Eugene Debs) would bring upon reform and influence that would threaten the status quo at the time.
I also know that many people felt very hostile to the ideals of the Socialist Party and other similar third parties.

Was it the greed of the nobles? Or was Russian influence over the king more important in keeping the Poles from having an effective resistance?

I'm interested right now in acquiring more specifical and detailed knowledge about Chinese culture before regular contact with Europe was initiated. I want to understand political traditions and general ideologies/religion/doctrines like Daoism, as well as the advent of modern Chinese nationalism, through older history. I feel that my education in history has been based so firmly in a western point of view, I think I need a substantial source on the matter to get myself going. Can anyone here recommend me where to start, some book to read? It's a very broad request, but hopefully someone out there understands my frustration with this knowledge gap :) .

I was curious about how the wives of concentration camp komadants would be dealt with by post-war society - would they have been seen as benefitting from the regime, or even encouraging genocide, to a level justifying a criminal trial? Would they have been seen as passive members of the party? What about the wives of industrialist who financial benefitted from the regime?

I've often heard of the strong role that the Roman republic/empire had in urbanizing western and northern Europe, and how areas outside Rome's influence such as Germany and eastern Europe did not urbanize until well into the middle ages. But in descriptions of the early Roman conquest of Italy, it sounds as if there were already many cities in Italy. How did Italy come to be so urbanized when at that time most of Europe outside Greece was not urbanized at all?

Having just finished Truth and Fiction in the Da Vinci Code by Bart Ehrman, I am curious about this question. I don't believe he answered it and my Professor claimed there is no biblical evidence behind this, and that it was added later.

This question is inspired by a thread in /r/badhistory, where a lot of people were trying to argue that the draft was a form of "slavery" or "slave labor."
Can someone explain the history of the notion that citizens have an "obligation" to fight for the state? When did this notion first become broadly accepted, and what was the political/philosophical justification made for it at the time? Once it had become generally accepted, was there/has there ever been a state that denied or didn't have this requirement (in "western" society)?
Please note that I'm not asking for people to debate whether or not the obligation is "right" - I just want to know about the history of the concept.

Inspired by this question about the Canadian flag, I have the same question about the American flag. What did/do they do with the old flags when a new state is added and the number of stars changes? Is there any official protocol?
