Please tell me.

Looking for a specific book about WWII.

I saw a book mentioned in a post a while back and now I can't seem to find the post.

It was the story of a German soldier who was part of a unit that fought the Russians in order to link up with another German unit and then surrender to the Americans. It was obviously taking place at the very end of the war. The title used the word "guy" or its German equivalent.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Ancient Germanic Traditions

What is the tradition called where men, often before battle I've noticed, would blow there nose, wash there hair and face in a bowl of water and then pass it to the next man to do the same? What was the significance for this and why did the Norse continue it long after the Germans did?

What books to include in an ancient world history library?

Looking for suggestions on good books to expand my school's library to help my students complete research papers. I am mainly interested in ancient world books but any world history books you feel are worth suggesting would be great.

I am aware of the ask historian book lists but I was hoping for a more narrow list.

The early development of the Republican Party included an alliance of the South with an anti-aristocratic group in what state? Why?

I think the general answer is the Federalist Pinckney's of South Carolina in an attempt to remove the Hamiltonian Federalists from office because they believed the H.F.'s were anti-liberty. Maybe someone can just confirm or point me in the right direction to seek the answer myself.

What was the diet of early settlers in the Appalachia Mountains.

I want to know what these early settlers were eating. What were the crops (like fruits and herbs) that they were growing, what sorts of recipes did they create? Also if anyone has any information on specifically the mountains of Western North Carolina that would be awesome. I'm looking to get a sense of the culinary history of the region.

What happened at the second Turkish siege of Vienna that lead to headlong retreat?

I read today that the first mark on the decline of the Turkish empire was when the second siege of Vienna in 1683 ended in total failure. I'm intrigued and really curious about what had happened. Seems like every time I do readings for Political Science I'm reminded by how little history of the world I've yet to learn about. There's always mention of these kind of worldly events that I've never even heart of before.

Could anyone tell me about what happened during the critical battle? Also did it lead to the decline of the Turkish empire?

Outside of religious wars like the Crusades, how involved was the Church and members of it during wars?

I found out that William of Normandy's brother, a bishop fought at Hastings with a club. This made me wonder how involved the clergy got when the Christian Kingdoms were invading each other. I was thinking more along the lines of direct military assistance, because I'm aware the Pope often wrote letters to try and end wars if they likely to interfere with planned crusades or other events the Church planned.

In the era just after the fall of rome (late 5th-early 6th century), what were the "greatest" cities in Europe besides Constantinople?

For a fairly loose definition of "great;" this could be in terms of population, centers of trade, cultural significance, political influence, or other measures you may subjectively choose.

Everybody knows that the center of "European culture" (which I'm well aware didn't really exist at the time) was Constantinople; I'm just wondering what the secondary locations were. The wikipedia page on historical urban community sizes indicates that most of the large cities in the region were in the middle east; Alexandria, Antioch, Aleppo, and so on. Did most significant cities of the era exist in the Eastern Roman Empire, or were there major cities in Western Europe as well?

When did the West start to have significant influence on Chinese culture? Specifically perceptions of beauty.

I'm interested on perceptions of beauty in China pre and post western influence. I was thinking of comparing ideas of beauty during 1920's-1930's (shanghai 30's period) to more contemporary ideas of beauty. However I'm wondering if during the 30's the west already had a significant influence on Chinese society.

the disturbingly high numbers of plastic surgeries in China (and east asia in general) are really concerning to me. And I'm curious whether these ideals of beauty that people are trying to achieve have more to do with traditional ideas of beauty, or if they are an attempt at a westernized standard of beauty (border line racial transformation)

I'm writing a play and a main character needs to be from a country which was historically oppressed by Germany, ideally (but not necessarily) one invaded during the war. More important that they be in a long-standing oppressor/oppressed relationship. Which are the best candidates?

Thanks for the input!

I am a Soviet soldier stationed somewhere in Western Russia in 1941 when Operation Barbarossa starts. What are my chances of survival?

Considering the horrendous casualties the Red Army faced in the beginning of the German invasion, I get the impression that the "original" army was all but wiped out by the end of Operation Barbarossa. Is that true or a misconception?

With other words, was the Soviet army of say 1943 basically made up of completely different soldiers or were there many veterans from the beginning left?

Why would Great Britain be willing to let India go, using Gandhi as an excuse?

When I first went to India for work and expressed admiration for Gandhi, one of my coworkers said that I shouldn't believe that "story". She went on to say that the whole thing was a hoax and that GB and Gandhi were working together. She even said that she would have preferred to fight for the freedom. At that point I had so many other things going on that I didn't really think much of it until recently. Does anybody have any clue as to why some Indians would think that?? thanks for your time

Religion in Greece: Hellenism to Greek Orthodox

I'm curious when Hellenism stopped being the main religion of Greece was it discredited? As in we're the previous Greek gods like Zeus considered to still exist? And if not, how did they rationalize that the gods they use to believe in/worshiped are not real but the abrahamic god is real?

Question about the transition of Samurai from country land-owners to castle town residents.

So, I've done a lot of reading up on the subject, and from what I gather it was throughout the course of the 'Sengoku' period that the samurai left their lands in the countrysides to move to castle towns where they could be more readily available to their lords, eventually receiving stipends instead of owning land. However, I what I can't find is the 'missing-link' of the transition. All I ever find is that the transfer happened, not the details of the in-between. Did the samurai live in barracks-like situations, or did they have individual homes in the cities? Families? Did they continue to manage their lands indirectly? I'm looking mainly at the Azuchi-Momoyama period. I'd love to know more about their living situations (sorry if my question is too wordy).
