I am a Biology scholar (or a professor) in either Europe or USA, ca. 1940 before the Modern Synthesis. How popular is teaching Evolutionary theory as part of a curricular class?

  • What are other alternatives inculcated?

  • How different is the corp of what was teached in those days to what we know today?

  • Was Evolutionary theory blatantly mocked within classrooms or among different educational plans?**

If needed or possible give details of the country, area or state related to your answer.

Would Rare Weapons (MKB 42, AVT, Type 100) be Issued Mainly to a Few Units, Companies, Platoons, etc, or Would They be Spread Thin? [WWII]

Would rare (less than 50,000) weapons such as the ones listed be issued to one group of soilders, or spread thin? How was it decided who would get them?

I'm most interested in the Nambu Type 100, but if information on that specific weapon isn't plentiful than the general trend for rare weapons will work.

Why was David Hume such a controversial figure?

I am currently studying intellectual history, and David Hume is one of the figures on whom we are focusing. It seems that, although he was far from the only controversial figure of his day, his impact was incredibly divisive, leading to his prosecution and earlier rejection from two different university chairs.

Does anyone have any insight as to why he was so loathed by the Presbyterian church in particular? Naturally his anti-religious views were a huge factor, but what in particular about his work made him a target?

What is the best way to learn about every day life in Europe during the 19th century?

Hey /r/askhistorian,

The 19th century has become my favorite century, mainly because I've been reading fiction mostly from that time period, set in Europe. And I guess reading books set in the 19th century, and written by 19th century authors, is one good way to get an insight into every day life back then.

But what other ways do you recommend? I've been thinking about letters as well, but how do you get a hold of them? Are there books by historians that quotes letters?

Did the American leadership know about the attack on Pearl Harbor before it happened?

I was told by my teachers that the Americans gave quite a bit of intelligence to the Japanese before the attack on Pearl Harbor. I find that hard to believe but it seems plausible considering the US may have needed a reason to enter the Pacific war. I hope my teacher was just a conspiracy freak.

I went to a Catholic US private school. My teacher was born in the 60s. My great grandfather served in the Pacific, and it affected him and his relationships until he died. Thank you.

What was the feeling in Britain among people in power, and 'normal' people, when the US was formed and they officially lost the war?

Despite searches I have had trouble finding a reasonable response to the question from the British side, there is certainly no shortage of literature about what Americans thought. Did losing this big colony and being stuck with Quebec worry or greatly upset people like George III and the PM?

How many iterations did it take for Caesar's hand written account of the Gallic Wars to end up in my Penguin Edition?

I have just spent a frustrating few hours on the internet hoping to find a picture of a part of the scroll Caesar wrote his Wars on. I didn't expect to find such a pic guessing the original text is long gone. But when I tried to trace my contemporary translation back, I got only as far as a few guys in the 19th century and later, who translated 'the Latin' into English, but nothing about where their source Latin document came from, and so of course no info. on where that doc. came from, etc. So...

What is the earliest know copy of the Wars, and what about it?

Is there a place on the web that will tell me what this earliest doc was, who wrote it, what it is supposed to be a copy of, when was it written, etc?
