I ask because, like most people, I have seen many pictures of Shirley Temple today. The dresses she wore when she was little were VERY short. Was this really the standard? When/why did it change? Most importantly, WHY was this acceptable?
I can only picture the stares from people if a little girl was dressed like that today. Both from creepers and concered citizens.

Thanks!!

I remember watching a History Channel show about Constantine a while ago and they portrayed him as being very pragmatic before his vision but, I can't find anything to back that up.

There's a bit of a dust-up in India about Wendy Doniger's The Hindus: An Alternate History. I know Doniger as the translator of my copy of The Rig-Veda, and that I like pretty well. So I was wondering if anyone knows if this book's any good, and why it's got so many people mad (apparently Penguin has agreed to pulp all their copies of the book).
Basically, should I try to track down a copy of this book? I'm considering it, I'm just really curious what she could have said to get everyone so angry.

He was a member of the Second Triumvirate, along with Mark Antony and Octavian. While Julius Caesar defeated Pompey and while Mark Antony defeated Brutus, he single-handedly ruled over the city of Rome.
The wikipedia article on him is five short paragraphs, barely half a page. It doesn't explain who he was, how he rose to power, or how he fell from it. When you google him, the third result is the wikipedia page on Mark Antony.
So, who was he? How did he rise to and fall from power? Why did Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, and Octavian all trust him so much?

I find when I'm reading about certain battles and overall theatres of war, it can be difficult to visualise where everyone is and I was wondering if there are any books or resources that can help.

Did the Soviet Union ever have a similar event, besides Stalin's purges, like the Red Scare of the 1950's?

Just an interesting question/thought in light of the coke commercial controversy.
I realize that "fluent" is not well defined.
